Of all the reasons for you to buy your first gun, this is the stupidest, and you probably shouldn't own any

I’d get a 9mm Glock, Sig, S&W so you can hopefully carry it with you.

Thanks I'll do that when I'm ready - thanks for the advice all.

Mostly protection against an intruder, etc. We live in a nice area though so it's mostly for fun or if the power grid ever goes down for a while / doomsday type shite.

Get what you feel comfortable with and GO SHOOT IT. Having a gun and not getting familiar with how it shoots, recoil, etc., does you no good. You need to be confident in using it if, God forbid, you need it in a self-defense situation.

This is my "simple" home defense gun, and one of the first I ever owned. It's an SCCY CPX-1, (the CPX-2 is the same but doesn't have a safety) and I would suggest it because it's 9mm, lightweight, small, easy to fire, easy to reload, has a safety, comfortable in the hand, and extremely easy to maintain because it's mostly made of poly.

It's also a good value at around $300, and comes in a multitude of colors. In other words, if you don't plan on using it a ton for recreational shooting it's perfect as you don't have to drop a ton of money on something that's reliable and easy.

It's just an overall good "first" gun, especially when talking handguns.

Believe it or not my first gun I ever bought was an Arsenal SLR-95 that was new back in the 90s. Hell of a gun but it gave me an addiction

I have a couple. More than enough to defend my land and my girl.

Though I may grab a new bow soon for bow season.

Too late to buy guns, OP.

The next best thing you can do is buy ammo and keep those of us with guns loaded up.

Send any .22LR, .223, 22-250, .270, 7mm-08, 30-30, 30.06 or 9mm to me and I'll keep it dry and ready

12 ga shells are also appreciated

If I'm thinking of getting my first gun here in Portland

I have purchased from NW armory in Tigard. They have good prices.

I haven't done any research about the local gun laws yet.

You cannot carry a gun in your car unless you have a conceal carry in the city limits of Portland. I believe a couple of other incorporated cities in the metro area also have that law.

If you have an Oregon drivers license, no idea how it works without one, they print you and and send in for a background check. Depending upon how busy you might wait 30 min to walk out the door with your purchase.

I know in WA state most stores won't deal with the redtape of dealing with an out of state license. No idea about Oregon.

I need to buy one. The ones I had tragically fell in the Quachita River many years ago. Such a sad day

I have owned my own guns since I got my first Daisy Red Rider BB gun at 5, a Benjamin 22 cal pellet gun at 8 or 9 and my first shotgun, a 20 gauge Winchester, at 12 years old.
Got my first rifle, a 22 marlin a year later along with a Browning 7mm mag at 15. I now have scores of pistols, rifles and shotguns. I can’t even imagine not having a gun. I personally owned guns before I got even was in grade school. I can’t imagine people not owning a gun
