If you could summarize today's shutdown, how would you describe the reason for it?

As I see it, if Democrats will not compromise during a shutdown, then they will never give in when the government is open. This reopening for 3 weeks talk is a bad idea.
For me, I think the Democrats want to make Trump look ineffective like Republicans did to Obama when he wanted to push ACA.
There is a huge distinction however In my view, the ACA is not a function or purpose of the federal government whereas securing borders is a primary function of the Federal Government. I say, "Do your job!"
Lastly, is the 700 mile fencing built that was under the Fence Act of 2006?
what does it look like?
Has it been effective?
Lastly, in 1992 we had 4192 border agents, today we have over 19,500
With 19,500 border agents in place we still have people from the other side of the world trying to get in illegally through our southern border. On this alone, I find it nuts Democrats will not support a barrier.
Border agents
if we had an effective wall/barrier end to end, think of how many border agents we would not need on the payroll for ever and ever...
20k border agents is serious money
at the least our government has stepped it up the last 25 years by adding 5x the number of border agents, but dang, are the problems along the border getting any better?
have a look at last year's ICE report, crimes committed by Illegals is staggering.
ICE by the numbers, scroll to page 4

Here is a pic of the fencing we have today. It is remarkably similar to the "wall" that Trump now supports
In some places we just have automotive barriers, that resembke those big metal Xs you see on the beaches of Normandy in D day footage
The border fence was essentially abandoned in 2011, because it was way more expensive than anticipated to build and maintain, it caused big ecological problems, and it did nothing to stem the flow of illegal immigrants and drugs into the US.
In 2011, Kay Bailey Hutchison sponsored an Amendment to the Fence Act that gave DHS the power to forego a fence and use different security measures as it saw fit.
Badically, if DHS wanted to extend the current fence then Congress should give it the money. If Trump would just call his wall a "fence" and let DHS decide where it should go, we might just solve the empass.

Sorry for a second post, but you raised a lot of issues. I don't think 20,000 border agents is enough to patrol some 2,000 miles of border 24/7. We should use the $5 Billion to hire more agents and more equipmemt. If the agents believe more barriers would assist them in some areas, then maybe build it...so far I have seen mixed info on whether Border Patrol wants more barriers.
The problem everyone seems to overlook is that even if we could cut down illegal border crossings bt 98%, then we still have a serious illegal immigration problem. Illegals are already here, and they are going to keep coming, wall or no wall.

The Democrats care more about Mexicans sneaking into the country than they do about American taxpayers.
Democrats see hardworking, decent Americans as cattle and they see illegals as a future voting bloc.
Anyone who buys the line about Democrats and their compassion for illegals is a moron.

This may be true, but is silent on a significant distinction.
There are at least 2 different types of people with no legal status to be in the US: those who came here legally and overstayed their visa, and those who came here by illegal means.
There’s a different mindset between the two. It’s a different demographic with regard to education, intellect, and productivity. One group is much more likely to be a burden than the other.
A wall addresses the reduction in the population of the less desirable group.

We're just spending more money that we don't have, but cynically speaking, 5.7B is chump change compared to the amount of money the dems have no problem spending on more frivolous things.
Trump would literally give the Dems the moon in exchange for his border wall. The fact that they flat out refuse to deal just shows me that they're only interested in preventing Trump from being able to claim any sort of political victory or lasting political relevance.
While I think declaring a national emergency is a mistake, I see justification for one just so that the government employees can get paid in light of the fact that the Democrats are refusing to do what they were put in office to do.

You see it incorrectly.
If it's a compromise, what do Democrats get in exchange for the useless wall?

If so many of the key Dems weren't already on record as supporting the wall then I would look at their objections. But they are on record and they supported exactly what President Trump wants to do.
So it's obvious that they won't negotiate just because they dislike Trump. What a pile of disgrace the left has become

The reality is that two people are to blame for this: Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell. Had they not slow walked the Maga agenda for two years at the behest of the Chamber of Commerce and the donor class... We would already have a wall.

Today's shut down is
trump needing to save face.
I oppose open borders.
Shutting down until trump can save face.
If trump comes out today with a bill to make hiring 2 or more illegals a felony then I will write $100 check go fund me, for the fences.
I can't take seriously this wall b.s. while 5 million overstay visas and nothing is done.

For 25B, and it was agreed to. Then Stephen Miller changed his mind, and Trump killed that deal.

Easy:
Trump has no problem shutting down the US government because he's in the employ of the Russian government.
