I think they know they have a loser as a candidate but have lots of money to spend in hopes of winning. That cabinet would be horrifying if Biden won. Unfortunately, I think if they did win they would kill their party once in office with control, taxes, and crazy shite.

There is a mechanism for replacing an incapacitated president. The Dems have threatened to do it to Trump a time or two.

Personally, I think the DNC knew Biden didn't have a chance. Wanted to appease a segment of their followers, while not burning a potential candidate for next time. When has a VP candidate on the losing ticket ever successfully won on a future try in the top spot? They are perceived as having failed, even tho they are the #2. Harris was an easy choice to burn. Just like Ferraro and Palin, once the election is over, you'll never see Harris' name seriously mentioned again.
If they seriously thought Biden had a chance, they would have made Hillary the #2, so that she could take over.

Nobody wanted Kamala for President, hence she had to drop out before the primaries got started. However her voting record is as liberal as Bernie.
The DNC is going to screw every moderate Democrat voter by ushering in Kamala, that no democrat voters wanted. The DNC is ushering in Marxist and socialist to run the party.
DNC knew Bernie couldn't win in general against Trump. The avowed socialist/communist would not fair well. However, he couldn't be VP because Biden said he would select a woman.
Do not doubt that the DNC and Dem politicians are wanting to go socialist/Marxist otherwise how in the hell do 3 newly elected congresswomen gain so much power in 2 years? The socialist are running the party but had to put somebody up that was palatable to the general public and is somewhat likable.
