Since women often take pay cuts in order to have more flexible hours or other special accommodations, this is going to hurt the women more than men.
not as much of an issue in these countries because of luxurious maternity and paternity leave, as well as subsidized childcare
who gets hurt in this scenario are the single men without kids who want to move up who will get caught up in this pay matrix

The wage gap has been repeatedly proven to be a lie. Anyone that thinks it still exists does not understand simple mathematics.
Anyone who believes the wage gap doesn't understand business.
If a company could pay woman 80cents for every dollar they pay a man then they would NEVER hire men.

I can see this leading to the creation of multiple subsets of job positions within a company in order to incentivize employees to work hard. Technician 1 goes to Technician 1a, 1b, 1c, etc.

What professional jobs allow for this?

Attorneys, doctors, engineers, nurses, and many more.
Weird. No attorney, doctor or nurse I know gets to work a special schedule for less pay. My doctor friend dropped to part time but I don't think she makes less than other part time doctors. Nurses typically work three 12 hour shifts. I don't know any attorneys, male or female, who work fewer than 60 hours a week.

Not being snarky, but you must not know many people. I know scores of professionals who have negotiated or agreed to take on less responsibility/hours in order to attend to family needs. If you are good enough at your job and valuable enough for your employer, you will most likely be able to work out such a scenario. You will obviously make less than if you were working full time, but the pay is commensurate with the reduced expectations.

I declined a promotion because I didn't want to have to devote more time to work but I don't consider that having negotiated a flexible schedule.
This is an example of why women shouldn't be in charge on anything important.

Flexible schedule is a catch-all. It's decision making between employee and employer. Some companies may not have allowed you to stay on without accepting a promotion, if that's how they cycle employees up.

Most men take that promotion. That leads to the pay gap. I have men that will work 8 weeks straight (weeekends included) without complaint. Men are mules. Mules get paid more than sheep.

Law firms for one.
We have quite a few Of Counsel attorneys who work part time and/or at home because they have kids.
They don't get paid as an Equity or Non-Equity partner, but in return they have flexible schedules, work when they want, and in some cases work from home most if not all the time.
We have a few paralegals that do this as well.

Glorifying people who exist to make other people money is the American way. I ain't for it. I'm good enough at my job to be able to keep it without having to devote more of my life to my job. I'd rather make myself indispensable on my terms.
