Mississippi State Guard requirements for joining

I had no idea this organization even existed until 20 minutes ago. I LOVE the sound of this organization. All volunteer, state-sponsored militia with no control or input from the federal government. But they still maintain a quasi-military structure, perform monthly training, and have strict standards and requirements for membership.

Did anyone else in MS know this group existed? Do other states have something like this?

the State Guard is a legitimate military organization recognized in Federal law as the reserve of the National Guard...

most State Guard organizations are cadre but after looking at the Mississippi website, I'm impressed with their organization and training.

Louisiana also has one, but doesn't seem to be as active as Mississippi.

Several states have such militia. They tend to be very small.

Alabama has some version of this. Mostly retired guard guys. I think their official function was to man the national guard armories in case units deployed. Been several years since I was around any of them and that mission was pretty outdated then. I have no idea what they do now if it still exists.

Louisiana’s State Guard exists pretty much on paper only. I guess it’s that way so one could be raised quickly without legislative red tape if the need arises.

I don’t know if this is 100% accurate, but I’ve heard that all Louisiana civil service employees are technically in the state guard by default.

All of this is correct. My mom is a state employee and she can be called to action at any time. All 56 years of her. LOL.

Some people call them State guards, state militias, state military, Etc. What I'm referring to are essentially the same as a federal military but at the state level. At one time this was the entirety of the US military force. Now only a few states have active, state-sponsored militias.

Just another example of the weakening of federalism and the bloated rise of the federal government and the weakening of states rights. At one time in this country's history it would be a joke to suggest that the federal military would stand any chance at all against even any one of the state militias let alone all of them in combination.

Nearly every state has laws authorizing state defense forces, and twenty-two states, plus the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, have active forces with different levels of activity, support, and strength. State defense forces generally operate with emergency management and homeland security missions. Most SDFs are organized as army units, but air and naval units also exist.[2][3] Depending on the state, they may be variously named as state military, state military force, state guard, state militia, or state military reserve

Alaska, California, Connecticut, Georgia, Indiana and South Carolina are the only truly active ones left.

Problem with Texas is, it falls under the direction of the Governor. It is not like Mississippi's IMO.

I'm a government drone as well and I figure if the State of Louisiana ever felt the need to give my fat arse a gun and a uniform, we are beyond fricked.

Couldn't find State Guard but found a Cajun one. Fired off an email for info on both. I'm sure they'd know

Well I'm not sure how active Mississippi's may be, but I'm going to find out. Spending one day a month driving to Hattiesburg and training is worth being involved in an organization organized at the state level and dedicated to the state's interests with no requirement to serve the federal government in any way. Right up my alley at this point in time.
