Petition to overturn the 17th Amendment anyone? We should right this wrong and give states their dang voice back. Our state legislators are weak and meaningless because of it. When have you ever really even given them a thought until now with giving us a voice on the election fraud or censuring a senator we don't like? They should be more than this, and they should recall those senators when they go rogue. What's the point in the people voting in the entire US Congress? The US Senate used to be mere ambassadors from the state legislatures and I say that is the rightful use of it.

Why stop at the 17th. Get rid of the 16th while we're at it.

This would solidify conservative control of the Senate for generations.

You know that county-by-county map showing which county voted for which party and it’s always overwhelmingly red except for the major population centers?

Not so important in presidential elections due to the Electoral College. Massively, hugely important for control of the Senate if the 17th is repealed.

That would clear out religious freedom, speech, and guns

The constitution without the bill of rights would go straight to tyranny especially today.

Not necessarily. Prior to the 17th, State Legislatures chose their Senators and the Governors either approved or vetoed.

Republican Governor and Legislature: 23

Democrat Governor and Legislature: 15

Republican Governor/Democrat Legislature: 3

Democrat Governor/Republican Legislature: 7

Republican Governor/Split Legislature: 1

Democrat Governor/Split Legislature: 1

You'd have anywhere between 46-70 R and 30-54 D

Hell, if you think about it, none of the Senators would have a party affiliation as they would be accountable to their respective State (and ONLY their respective State) and serve at the mercy/pleasure of that State's Legislature and Governor.

I remember arguing with a libshit about the EC.

She was going on and on about it’s unfair and it’s dumb and land can’t vote etc.

I told her I’ll trade the EC for sending the senate back to the states.

No response.

The problem that caused this amendment was that many states could not seat senators because they were deadlocked or the governors vetoed their choice.

I don't see that as a problem...

The guy above you had interesting numbers.

46 Rs and the 7 states with Dem governor and R legislature could make it 14 more Rs depending on veto majorities. That’s 60 right there. And I think you’d certainly get more MAGA Republicans than Chamber of Commerce Republicans given today’s electorate.

Would be fascinating to watch unfold.

Kansas - veto proof
Kentucky - veto proof
Louisiana - No
Michigan - No
North Carolina - No
Pennsylvania - No
Wisconsin - No

Now the other side:

Maryland - veto proof
Massachusetts - veto proof
Vermont - veto proof

It forced compromise.

Almost every amendment beyond the Bill of Rights has done nothing but made it easier to centralize power to the Federal government and removed checks that were in place to make the parties work together.

I with they'd never passed the 12th amendment. Think about the tie breaker in the Senate right now if Biden had to deal with Trump as VP.

The founding fathers had it right the first time. This Amendment screwed it up. The 17th would be fine if there was a way to recall senators when they defied the will of the people who sent them to Congress. The reason there is no remedy to recall such senators is because the people did not vote for them. The state legislators could recall any senator that did not vote according to the will of the state.
