Its bittersweet. We moved my oldest daughter into her dorm at Georgia Tech. Tech was her backup school. She received admission to Columbia, but none of us felt good about it. Their re-opening plan was awful and of course NYC has seen its share of violence.

About the time we started to lean toward Tech, all the crap in Atlanta started. My wife is so nervous, but my daughter was all smiles. She got a seemingly wonderful roommate - a family from North Carolina. She'll be okay. Didn't think it would be this hard.

One thing I noticed this weekend when moving her in was how there weren't any protests or complaints about Tech opening back up. Students were wearing masks, but excitement was in the air.

Calling NYC a shithole is an insult to holes filled with shite.

Even the democratic mayor here doesn't play the rioting/violence game very long. She will be fine in Atlanta. Congratulations.

(That said tell her to stay out of "bad" neighborhoods)

Geez, just wait until you have to give her away in marriage and just hope its to a guy.

Thanks. I know she will as well.

I always told her from a young age that I went to Mississippi State and LSU so she didn't have to. It wasn't a knock on my alma maters, I just wanted to push her to do something better.

Our five choices were Columbia, Princeton, Georgia Tech, Vanderbilt and Duke. She did not get into Princeton but got into the other four. I secretly believe that she liked Tech better than any of them - its pretty conservative as far as colleges goes, but she fell into the Ivy League trap with Columbia, thinking it would set her up better.

The shutdowns ruined her senior year, we had a crazy summer around here, and I believe this was good that came from it.

Congratulations to her! She will be fine. Just encourage her to keep her guard up. Tech is a great school with a great environment but pre-pandemic, Tech students were victims of random crime in the area.

Atlanta is Atlanta but unless something’s changed the campus is pretty safe. The GT cops are very aggressive about keeping non-students out. My daughter went to Vandy and it was the same way.
