I agree with free trade purest however I think they are politically myopic.

Trump tore down the Blue Wall in 2016 because of his talk on trade. The people of MI, WI, OH and PA are culturally pretty conservative but protectionist at heart.

I'm willing to sacrifice a few baby tariffs here and there to ensure that the Rust Belt remains red. Without them there is no Republican in the White House. And without a Republican in the White House we will continue to move to a more SJW virtue signaling socialist country at an enormous clip.

I understand that tariffs err on the side of less liberty.

However a Democrat in the White House is a MUCH worse attack on our liberties. Not only would you get tariffs, but gun control, taxes, regulation, illegal aliens, open borders, skin color balkanization, ...you name it...if it grows government and takes away our liberty Democrats want it.

The problem with free trade is that it is a rigged game. China can produce things very cheaply because they are paying their workers pennies and not adhering to any environmental regulations.

Is it really free trade when our government imposes a minimum wage, mounds of regulations, hoops to jump through, unions and laws protecting those unions while these other countries can produce their products without all of these things holding them back?

If Mexico, China, Canada, etc can produce better and cheaper products because of genuine innovation then fine but lets not pretend what we have now is free trade.

Lets implement free trade...but lets remove all the burdens we place on American businesses.

Generally speaking I’m not a fan of tariffs but you’re right, if a little protectionism preserves Trump’s advantage in the rust belt I can accept some targeted tariffs.

Hey, it’s really no different than the Prog/Dims promising their under achieving voter block free stuff on the back of taxpayers, at least Trump is protecting a portion of our economy that provides jobs for people rather than handouts.

So who really thinks a trade war will hurt US more than Mexico, China, Canada etc?
We hardly export anything. I say screw their threats.

Combine two hot topics - trade war and meddling in elections - and what do you have? Democrat foreign policy!
quote:

President Obama’s warning to those championing Britain’s exit from the EU was stark: Leave, he said, and the “U.K. is going to be in the back of the queue” on trade deals with the U.S.

Empty threats by an empty suit were, not surprisingly, empty.

Tariffs are weak and hurt the American consumer. Pretty much taking your ball and going home. Why not take your ball, go home and call up the other players who were playing the game fairly and say “come play at my house, I’ve got a better goal, a better court, and my mom will give us ice cream when we’re done.”

Incentivize companies to come here and STAY here by slashing regulations, taxes, minimum wage rules, and unions on companies. Because tariffs do nothing to help us out.

THIS X1000. Free trade is the right's version of a socialist utopia on the left. It only works in theory and is destroyed when human greed in entered into the equation.

Everything is a trade off

At least he is honest enough to say that he disagrees with this policy but it might be worth it for other considerations.

I'll take that every day over someone who tries to justify backing the actual policy even though they don't really agree with it

I agree with both of you. However, my argument was the theory of free trade like socialism fails in practice, because they both fail to calculate for greed.
