How will McConnell use impeachment as leverage?

The first opportunity for leverage over the White House will come in the shape of the Senate “rules of impeachment”. The senate will have wide latitude in how they set-up the processes and procedures for the trial – and McConnell never misses an opportunity to leverage a “get” from his senate position.
So what will the White House need to give McConnell… or what will McConnell’s ask be, in order to protect the office of the president? Here’s where you have to remember Tom Donohue and the Wall St priorities.
McConnell (subtext Donohue) would prefer the confrontation with China be eliminated and the tariffs dropped. Is that too big an “ask”? Would the White House sell/trade McConnell a China deal for better impeachment terms?
All of these are questions worth pondering now, because there’s no doubt they are being discussed amid those in DC sitting on the comfy Corinthian wing-backs and gleefully rubbing their hands around a well polished mahogany table….
….There are trillions at stake !

Something for Israel and/or China
Meanwhile, the country continues to descend into a gap of haves and have nots and moral degeneracy.

Bernie, Klobuchar, Pocohontas, and Booker will not be campaigning.

I've been saying this in thread after thread for weeks.
Anyone wanting a Senate trial is a fool.
Senate Republicans will not save Trump because it's the right thing to do.
They will save him if they get a better deal than they can get from Pelosi and Schumer.
Senate Republicans are not Trump Republicans.
Nancy Pelosi is about to make Senate Republicans the most powerful group of people in the world.
Senate Republicans are praying for impeachment. Trump should not.
If Trump wants to stay President, he's going to have to let McConnel squeeze him.
All this cocaine Mitch is about to feast on Dems in a Senate trial is bullshite.
Senate Republicans about to feast on Trump and they have Pelosi to thank for it.

Vote him out of office Mitch and see what happens to YOU. You'll get kicked out of office come 2020 and likely lose the Senate.
If there isn't open insurrection. Do what you think you are big enough to do. Then start running fricker. There will be thousands and thousands of us on the way to Washington looking for answers from you bastards.
The home folks will be looking for your arse too. So you can't run there.

It will somehow be tied to the budget. Get ready for another shutdown.

That article is bull crap.
Leverage? What leverage?
Not one single republican in the senate will vote to convict Trump. Not even a cuck like Mitt Romney.
Why? Because republican senators have no leverage against Trump as long as the polls show staunch republican opposition and they face primary voters in a few months.
There are and will be more democrat votes against impeachment than there are republican votes for it.
Mitch McConnell is going to use the impeachment trial to absolutely humiliate democrats, keep their presidential candidates and incumbent senators off the campaign trail, and pump up the President’s reelection campaign.

McConnell has no leverage in this as Trump will crucify them and Republican Party and all their gigs going forward would be over.
People would riot if Trump were impeached over nothing, he is America and the heartlands president, and people haven’t been happy with Congress for a long fricking time.
In addition Trump is not disappearing even if he was impeached, he would go scorched earth if it even trends that way. Dude is still a billionaire

Correct.
What the article in the OP is ignoring is that such leverage would only be possible if there were even any hint of bipartisan support for impeachment and republican voter support it in at least high 20s to low 30s depending on what state that support is in.
That’s not reality today as this is what support for impeachment is right now.
Republican senators will not convict and remove a Republican President with such incredibly low numbers like this and thus why Mitch and company have no leverage against Trump.

No senate republicans will save themselves by saving Trump. Many senate republicans don’t like trump you’re right in that score, but they love the DC life they lead.
With a 95% approval rating not “saving” Trump is electoral suicide for republican senators. Self interest, and self interest alone is enough for Trump to win at trial.

What do you make of Mitch saying no USMCA vote until the impeachment trial is over in the Senate?

Was going to say basically the same thing. A Repb. voting to remove Trump is a vote to remove himself come their next election. Personal and political clout is more important to them than Trump. It would be the old cutting off your nose to spite your face thing.

It's amazing how hard Tom Donahue and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce fights for China.
Are we sure the U.S. Chamber of Commerce is really not the Chinese Chamber of Commerce?

Fascinating article. Well written. McConnell will shape the impeachment trial to ensure maximum benefit for him and his power, not the GOP. Trump has too big of a following, too popular, too successful as President, and too street-smart to be played by Mitch and Donahue.
That article illustrates all that is wrong with DC. The Swamp, the Uniparty, the power grabs, the ruling class at work. I've never been more of an advocate of term limits.
My support of Trump grows DAILY.

If an R senator does anything underhanded and the Bad Orange Man gets wind of it, rest assured he will publicly humiliate them.
Nothing should concern America more than not having a trial in the Senate. Especially with how flimsy the charges are.
Looking a lot like two sides of the same shitty coin.

Trump has the Ukraine card to play if McConnell wishes to go there. The media will help Trump too because he will expose Republicans...Romney and Graham for sure and probably many other senate Republicans. This is the reason Graham is calling for a quick senate trial.
McConnell will thread the needle. He will get concessions from Trump to satisfy the U.S. Chamber of Commerce but the U.S. Chamber of Commerce is weakened because Trump has already shifted the global supply chain for multinationals and USMCA will seal it. McConnell HAS TO pass USMCA. If not the GOP senate will be damaged big time. The point is the golobal economic shift by Trump in terms of trade have the U.S. Chamber of Commerce members adjusting to MAGA. They are moving their supply chain out of China and either bringing it home or to other counties like Japan, Vietnam, South Korea, India, Mexico, Chili, etc., etc....so Chinese tariffs are now actually favorable to them. The make up of the most influential lobby in DC, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, is leaning more MAGA.

I don’t disagree entirely but I think Senate Reps know this is probably the hottest of hot button issues for their constituents maybe moreso than the SCOTUS nominees, and will handle it properly.
