How does one successfully argue with a conservative?

I have this one conservative friend who always starts political arguments. I usually just ignore it but when I decide to engage him with facts and well-thought out statements, he just counters with idiotic statements and tries to call me stupid, acts as though he's completely oblivious as to what the right has done over the years and what they're doing now, pretends the Russian collusion story is still regarded as false, and just acts as though Hillary is going to kill me and my grandmother (his words, not exaggerated generalizations).
How do you even remain engaged in debate with someone like this? The temptation to stoop to his level is high but I remain calm and usually just end it there. I hate ending it there, though, because it usually makes me feel like he thinks he won and I lost, when in reality I'm just literally at a loss for words on how to respond to his ignorance.

This sounds like a troll attempt because you just described having a political argument with anyone that doesn't know what they are talking about. Not just with a conservative.

Agree to what a set of facts are first, and then move onto solving the actual issues and what your opinion on these issues and facts are. Conservatives are fine with this.
Trumpkins are a different breed who are blissfully unaware of how much they are emulating the Obama Leftist supporters of just a few years ago. They mistake what makes them feel good as a fact, and thus it's almost impossible to argue with them.

If your grandmother is still alive you're too young and ignorant to debate with a conservative. As you get older you won't be too young but your IQ will not change.

Just say "agree to disagree" and move along with your life, you both are striving for the same objective but using different approaches to reach that objective and both parties are stubborn, they aren't gonna concede shite, that's when compromise and middle ground becomes a viable option and then proceed forward
