The 1986 Senate had 55 Dems / 45 Repubs.

Confirmed 98-0.

How?

This was before the Democrat Party became uncivil, extreme, and Marxist.

That was before Robert Bork and what Ted Kennedy did.

This was pre-Bork and much of the relative ire was against Rehnquist becoming Chief Justice (which was concurrent with Scalia's process).

Senators once respected the exact role of the Senate in the conformation process. Then Bork. Now you are here.

yeah Bork was the following year

then they tripled down in 91 with Thomas (52-48)

when you hear leftists talk about "norms" and things like that, they pretend this all started with Garland

Ginsberg was appointed in 93 with a 96-3 vote, then Breyer 87-9

with Bush, you start to see the partisanship again by the DEMs (Roberts: 78-22, Alito 58-42). then it was fully partisan after that

In my opinion, it was some point in the early 90’s when abortion and gun control became the 2 issues that basically polarized the entire electorate. Think about it... as conservatives, the second amendment and the right to life are 2 completely non-negotiables. I would never vote for a President that I thought would nominate a judge who would rule the second amendment didn’t guarantee an individual right to own a firearm. I’d never vote for a President who would knowingly nominate a judge who thought abortion (especially late term) should be legal. I suspect Liberals feel the exact opposite. Therefore, we are where we are now.

in the 90s, clinton got 2 liberal justices appointed with insane support

it started in the 80s with Bork, then ramped up bigly with Thomas in the early 90s

then it went nuclear under GWB and has remained partisan since

Scalia being Catholic actually played a large role. Reagan knew that most Northeast liberals couldn't be seen opposing a Catholic judge. He also had a very easy way about him that made him extremely likable to the public.

There were quite a few people in the administration who wanted Bork to go first and save Scalia. Knowing that whoever went second would likely flip the court and cause Democrats to put on a more aggressive defense. The feeling was that Bork would struggle in that spot but Scalia would shine.

The Democrats are consumed with Leftist Ideological fervor. They are entirely Ideologically-possessed. It’s scary for America for a thousand reasons, SCOTUS confirmation hearings being just one. If they held the Senate and Presidency they would scrub the US Constitution , without reflection or regret, of everything that makes us special and unique to reflect their Leftist fundamentalism. They have set course for Marxist/Maoist Revolution. They are all in and that requires that they hold ALL the power. Barrett makes that much, much harder.
