Seems like he was serving himself more than his countrymen/women during his lengthy time as a senator. Did he own a business? Invest wisely? Invent something?

Seriously, how does one make 16 mil. Working as a senator?

Yea, 16 million really isn't much by US Senate standards. That could easily be just a couple book deals.

It’s really sad that the politicians get so much money while they’re literally taking money away from hardworking federal employees

Calling any politician a public servant is laughable.

had a thread on pelosi last week that said the same thing, and she is worth i think $360 million having never held a real job in her life or received a check from private sector.

most of it is speaker fees to the tune of 6 figures plus they get insider info to get rich in illegal stock markets but they have brokers do it for them so they can claim no direct links to insider trading. if anyone wants to ask questions its the brokers who go to jail and the politicians laugh all the way to the bank.

plus buy properties for $10k in "secret" auctions they claim were public and just nobody else wanted to bid on million dollar properties selling for $10k

it really is a situation where the rules do not apply to them

I think he kept some of the money when Hans Gruber tried to rob that Japanese office building.

I know the bag man, uhhhh I mean a lobbyist, who managed the interests for a prominent former senator from Louisiana

Let’s just say the former senator’s net worth did not reflect the financial resources he actually had control of

This is just the way sausage is made in Washington. People shouldn't get their panties in a wad over this sort of thing.

Now, let's get back to the important work of scrubbing old Manafort tax returns for math errors.

McCain was worth far more than $16M FWIW.

Like John Kerry, he hid his net worth via separate filings from his wife.

Together, they were worth ~$200M.
To frame that better, when McCain was asked during the 2008 campaign how many homes he owned, he couldn't even answer.
He didn't know.

Book deals were probably a good chunk of it.

Also fat salary + military pension + disability check.
