It took a while:
Watergate -- The press discovered in the modern era they could take down a president.
Clintons -- They developed a war room that could fight off efforts to take them down or shine light on their misdeeds. The press followed their leads/spin.
GWB Election -- After he won election after the Florida debacle, the press decided no more victories for a republican. Though this hasn't been entirely successful, the advent of organizations like Media Matters flourished at this time.
Fox News -- With the success of Fox News came the solidifying of the opposite side in cable news. MSNBC first and an evolved CNN later even though CNN was the first cable news outlet. There was a time when both reported down the middle.
Obama -- A media darling with the stated goal of transforming the country. His efforts have come close to actually transforming the country.
Trump -- With shades of Watergate, the press decided to try to take down another president.
California and Silicon Valley with help from New York -- Silicon Valley is powerful in opinion development. They are monolithically progressive and not powerful but extremely powerful. Almost all computer science billionaires are progressive and not timid about using the platform. We the people have fallen into a compulsive need to use this platform and be influenced by it. They are opinion shapers. Hollywood entertainment and New York news are almost monolithically liberal and they use their influence. Followers, follow.
Education and Higher Education -- now almost entirely liberal/progressive and in control of the youth. They are essentially government employees.
I didn't mention how much the press disliked Ronald Reagan. I could go on. I won't.

Read the Fall of the Roman Empire.
It's always, always, throughout history...outlanders who have no allegiance to the country that is paying them good money to be prosperous.
Once a country goes parasitic with too many people who aren't Citizens and won't swear allegiance to their new country, they go bankrupt morally, politically and economically.
A Country only thrives if they think we're all in it together...and believe in a common cause. Not outsiders who don't give a crap and still swear allegiance from whence they came.
Our common thread used to be just the flag, which was always dangling a loose thread...now it's not even that.
Citizenship was supremely important in Rome and difficult to obtain. At the fall of the Roman Empire, only 1 out of 10 centurions was actually a Roman Citizen.
