How Democrats hope to obtain Trump's tax returns

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Congress could request President Donald Trump’s tax returns under a seldom-used 1924 law, which Democrats say they plan to invoke promptly if they win control of the House of Representatives or the Senate in the Nov. 6 elections.
quote:
In a move that would set up a battle over one of Trump’s most closely guarded secrets, the newly installed Democratic chairs of any of three congressional tax committees could ask Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin to hand over the returns.
The law says the Treasury secretary must comply, but it does not say how quickly that must happen, leaving open the possibility of delays that could force Democrats to seek a court order.
quote:
In 1924, Congress awarded itself the power to obtain tax returns. Previously only the president could disclose them. The change came during a bribery scandal involving federal officials and Wyoming oil field leases known as the Teapot Dome scandal.
quote:
The law says the Treasury secretary “shall furnish” tax returns requested by the chairman of any of three congressional tax panels: the House Ways and Means Committee, the Senate Finance Committee and the Joint Committee on Taxation.

Why don’t they just cite the law instead of telling us what their interpretation is? Do you have the cite?

The gop senate should request Obama college transcripts

honestly would not be surprised he’s just using his tax returns as bait. Make the left fall over themselves fixating on his tr only to pull the rug out from under them at the right moment.

It's fodder for the stupid. If there was anything even remotely nefarious the IRS would have hammered him already.

Well Madcow's big news story showed he paid like $40 million in taxes in one year, so.....

Do you have the citation? Has it been posted? I’m not big on trusting a law professor’s interpretation.

Is that the same law that applies to the FBI and DOJ?

How about the Dems do something to help their constituents or make this country better; after all, isn't that what they were voted in for?
IF they win the house they have no excuse not to work on making moves that benefit their voters - instead they'll choose to oppose Trump at every turn.
This is NOT how our government is supposed to work for us.

Ok. I found the law. The committee can look at it in closed session. If they were to leak then it would be a felony. Funny enough....a few paragraphs later, the President has the power to demand tax returns of anyone he chooses and does not have to be in closed session. Let’s get all of them!!!

And if Mnuchin says no, what then?
Congress hold Manchin in contempt of Congress and ask the DOJ to enforce the contempt in court and the DOJ says no thanks we're good.
Just like Eric Holder told congress when they held him in contempt of Congress.

Where are all the cites? This post is extremely lacking in cites.
