Agree, but the scam they are running does not call for serious crime. They keep it petty, just enough to do a quick stint over the weekend or so. It's almost a rite of passage of sorts.

It may be costlier in the long run since private sector logistic chains are more efficient.

Why not just pass a law restricting EBT purchases to non-crappy foods.

No soda ,no cookies, no candy

No, because they will just sell them instead. The food box proposal is the best idea. End the EBT cards and issue a booklet containing 52 vouchers that allow you to obtain a food box for the week containing all the essential food sources for your family. A proper ID will be needed as well to obtain said box.

Too many problems. Would be cheaper and easier to just tweak current system. Whole host of problems would emerge: the food itself would have to be non-perishable, which limits the healthy foods that can be included a la fruits and veggies. Storage systems. Delivery would be a nightmare, especially for those who are homeless and or move all the time. Prime for tampering/whole other legal problems. Costs are certainly going to be higher. One of those things that you think, “oh that makes sense”, until you actually get into the weeds of how it would work, or not work rather

The federal government already visits every address in this country 6 Days a week.

The half of the food stamps not replaced by the box can be used for fresh fruits and vegetables.

If you’re homeless or Move a lot, how are you getting your food stamps? Send it to the same place.

There is still fraud with people selling food stamps for cash. You'd also need to implicate an ID law where your food stamps can only be claimed by you. But progressives hate IDs and would bitch about that too.

Good.

The problem is, food stamps have been de-stigmatized. We need to re-stigmatize it. Shame is a powerful motivator.

There are incidents of people gaming the system no doubt. The explosion of "food Stamps"and EBT cards during the Obama Presidency was probably way overdone.

I have a client who is a grocery store GM and although he can tell you stories about people abusing the system he once told me that the vast majority of people using the Louisiana Purchase cards are older folks over 65 actually he guesses that they probably average 72-75 years of age.

Going to the grocery for them is something of a release for them since most are retired and spend a lot of time at home....it's social interaction

Why has no one mentioned that the vast majority of people on SNAP are either elderly or have full time employment? Or should we act to make life more difficult for the thousands of military personnel currently recieving SNAP benefits?

Reality is programs like SNAP are a small percentage of the federal budget. If you reduced SNAP to zero you would not significantly reduce federal expenditures, but you would create more crime.

I used to think like a lot of people on this board but after doing some volunteer work at my church, I learned a lot more about "the system" including food stamps, social security, medicaid and medicare. It's typically not the "sexy" examples of the welfare queen exploiting the system and driving around in a 40K car

More often than not, the food stamp recipient is an older person who is on social security , or their late husband's social security and they don't cheat the system and they need the help. Or a single mother who works. The amount of deadbeats is actually very much a minority.

It also might surprise a lot of people to know that the vast amount of people on medicaid are the children of working class families both white and black. The parents have insurance through work, but if they added the kids, they could not make ends meet, and if they had an emergency and had to pay a deductible, it would be financially devastating.

It's seldom black and white

So you want to shame the old lady who is on Social Security? Because most of the SNAP recipients are the elderly.

Yep. My wife's grandma is an 85-year old recipient. She is a Trump voter, but is scared shitless about this program change.

I've said it before: make the food stamp card a photo ID. Multiple problems solved.
