Houston, Ryan Gosling And 'First Man' Have A Problem

Canadian Ryan Gosling, and Damien Chazelle (French and Canadian Parents) hate the US, hate Donald Trump, and love other Countries. We get it.
But if you spend $70million of other people's money making a film about an event which culminated in the planting an American Flag on the moon, and anti-Americanism leads you to exclude the flag part, at least you keep your mouth shut about it.
If you don't, you find what should have been an epic premier release, instead competing with a Goosebumps sequel for fourth at the Box Office. What an unbelievable business blunder.

Theories abound as to the reasons that Damien Chazelle's First Man disappointed at the box office this past weekend, totaling a way-below-expectations $16.5 million and barely holding off the latest offering in the Goosebumps franchise for third place.
The film may have suffered from the backlash over the omission of the famous flag planting scene which riled politicians from Marco Rubio to President Trump. It could have been due to an advertising and publicity campaign that made the film seem rather dull and plodding. Or perhaps most Americans didn't find enough that was compelling about Neil Armstrong the person to provide them the impetus to put down their Roku remotes and head to their local multiplexes.
Most industry trades and mainstream media today cushioned the blow of that disappointing opening by mentioning that films such as First Man often use their critical reviews . . .

I'll be honest: I didn't go see it not because of the flag, but because
1) Ryan Gosling
2) It looks like a bunch of made up shite to make Apollo 11 look more exciting than it was.

Eventually the entertainers will realize people don’t have to spend money watching their product. There’s plenty of other options.

The moon landing was a major accomplishment in the history of Mankind but it was done completely as an American project and has always been seen as such. What Neil Armstrong did was a giant leap for Mankind but the relentless drive to do it was done by the United States of America (and has yet to be duplicated by any other country).
TLDR: This was an AMERICAN accomplishment, one in which this country has taken great pride in. To purposely exclude the planting of the US flag from the film is a serious slap in the face to the entire country. Don't expect people to flock to your movie if it slaps them in the face.

Who the hell thinks making a moving regarding a stable patriotic symbol in American history while ostercisizing American patriots would be a good idea? No flaming fairy is lining up to see this movie regardless if you show the flag or not. What an astronomical miss on your audience

We aren't going to see it specifically because the movie looks brooding and dull.
But sure, flag planting and stuff.

It's amazing how dumb they are. This should have been the biggest movie of the year.

Spielberg was the better director and Neil is better than Ryan.

Unfortunately I went to see it without doing any research. It was indeed boring and dull

It is akin to not showing the battle at the Alamo of the film "The Alamo".

B/c the moon landing never happened.

When I found out the movie was not about the space race but was, instead, a 2 hour long constant reminder that he lost a young daughter to cancer, I did a full 180 on it.

Or not naming and/or showing the US in a movie about the Revolutionary War.

First Man is a propaganda piece to reinforce the myth of the moon landing on a new generation. Say what you will about these younger generations but they are more distrusting of government than the previous few.

Well, they didn't blow up enough shite to get them interested in going to see the movie...

I'll watch it..... when I can stream it for free on Kodi.

this is no surprise. Will Hollywood ever get the message? you know...the "F you Hollywood" message? Keep politics out of Hollywood and maybe, just maybe they could have success again. Until then...enjoy continued financial disappointment.
fricking dumbasses.

You really cannot make Apollo 11 look more exciting than it was. That was a nail biter in real life.
If you followed Neil Armstrongs life, you'd not find anything exciting aside from his performance in the space program. That man was cool as ice water and had his life on the edge a number of times during his astronaut years. And in every case it was his coolness under pressure and his outstanding understanding of the situation that saved his life - he wasn't just there and got saved by luck.
- During the Gemini program to practice rendezvous, soon after he docked the Gemini with the Agena target vehicle, the whole configuration began to roll uncontrollably. Obviously the thought was that the Agenda vehicle had malfunctioned, so he undocked from it. It turned out that the Agena had been fighting the instability and when they undocked the roll rate began to accelerate - one of the Gemini roll control thrusters was stuck in the ON condition. The vehicle was rolling at a rate close to human unconsciousness about 3 rotations per second, when he decided to activate the re-entry system to fight the instability - and finally brought the system under control, but the activation of the re-entry meant they had to actually perform the re-entry so the mission was cut short. Outstanding example of thinking and working under extreme pressure and extraordinary physical stress.
- while practicing the lunar landing at Ellington AF the trainer became unstable and started an uncontrollable roll. He wa less than 150 ft off the ground and had to wait until the roll had the ejection path pointed in a safe direction to activate or he would have crashed into the ground.
- on Apollo 11, during the landing the computer began activating the MASTER ALARM light indicating that it was overloaded and began shedding uncritical tasks, but Mission Control instructed him to ignore and continue. He soon noticed the onboard guidance system was going to set the craft down in a rocky landscape which would have been catastrophic, so he took over manual control to fly over the rock field and began searching for a safe location. He flew the LM until he set it down with less than 20 seconds of fuel remaining. My best friend was the Mission Controller in charge of monitoring the LM fuel and was calling out fuel remaining every 30 seconds. He told me later that they had never run a training session with less than 5 minutes of fuel remaining.
That was one cool and competent man. I would not like to play poker with him.

quote:It was the culmination of the "Race to the Moon" between the US & Russia at the height of the cold war. Russia jumped to the front with the Gargarin manned space flight. We came back with Glenn orbiting the earth, then won the finale and planted the American Flag to prove it. One would think that defeating Russia in in the space race would be a huge part of the storyline. Sheesh. I won't be watching it.
