WASHINGTON (AP) — The topic of reparations for slavery is headed to Capitol Hill for its first hearing in more than a decade with writer Ta-Nehisi Coates and actor Danny Glover set to testify before a House panel.

The House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights and Civil Liberties is scheduled to hold the hearing next Wednesday, its stated purpose “to examine, through open and constructive discourse, the legacy of the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade, its continuing impact on the community and the path to restorative justice.” The date of the hearing, June 19, coincides with Juneteenth, a cultural holiday commemorating the emancipation of enslaved blacks in America.

It's good they have Coates there, he can detail his harrowing experiences as a slave on a cotton plantation.

Were they slaves? What's the basis for their testimony?

How does forcing one group who have never owned a slave

to transfer wealth to another group who have never been slaves

make any sense in a sane world??

And people were worried abortion would turn off the average voter.

Even he doesn't know what reparations should look like after championing the "conversation" about them 5 years ago.

In the retrospective interview he just did, he flat out said "it can't be as easy as checking the black box on the census" and should be isolated to only living people who can make a claim to have been discrimated against by racist housing policy in the 1950s or whatever.

When pressed by the interview, he defaulted to politician-speak "that's why we need a committee..."

I say every living person who owned a slave in the US gives every living person who was a slave in the US $1 Trillion each. Would that be enough?

Yeah, I'm white but my descendants came into this country in the late 19th century. My family didn't have any slaves.
