In a stunning move, the House of Representatives on Tuesday approved an amendment to the Make America Secure and Prosperous Appropriations Act that will roll back Attorney General Jeff Sessions’s expansion of asset forfeiture.

Amendment number 126 was sponsored by a bipartisan group of nine members, led by Michigan Republican Rep. Justin Amash. He was joined by Democratic Reps. Ro Khanna of California; Washington state’s Pramila Jayapal, a rising progressive star; and Hawaii’s Tulsi Gabbard.

Civil asset forfeiture is a practice by which law enforcement can take assets from a person who is suspected of a crime, even without a charge or conviction. Sessions revived the Justice Department’s Equitable Sharing Program, which allowed state and local police agencies to take assets and then give them to the federal government — which would in turn give a chunk back to the local police. This served as a way for these local agencies to skirt past state laws designed to limit asset forfeiture.

This is one of the most egregious rights grabs in our country's history.

This is an appropriations bill, one that contains precious fence funding for Trump to brag about, the stuff Mulvaney was talking up earlier this year. If Rand can punch this home, I doubt Trump vetoes on Sessions' behalf.

This is why we should be metaphorically kissing arse of the framers for not giving the President line item veto power when drafting up articles one and two.

When we eventually rewrite the Louisiana state constitution, removing the line item veto power will have to and must be a feature of the new constitution. The Governor has the legislature by the balls and thereby the state with that power

this "had" good intentions by only stealing property from the bad guys, but very fast law enforcement started inventing shite on people to steal property then you cant fight it, or EVER get your property back, or even the value of it back, you could only get the phony charges dropped and "maybe" an apology at best, and then your still screwed out of your money and stuff.

all they really needed was an "opinion" that it was ill gotten to take it from you and judges go along with the seizures because the "opinion" of the cop was good enough to justify it

Rolling back illegal and unconstitutional civil asset forfeiture sounds like law and order to me.

Even r/The_Donald full of mindless Trumpkins gives sessions shite for his dinosaur beliefs, especially on this topic.

I wonder if this new viral video of a cop literally taking cash out of some poor hotdog vendor's wallet because he doesn't have a license has anything to do with this bill
