Historically, has a US Presidential candidate ever withdrawn from the race ...

... after accepting his party’s nomination as POTUS candidate?
Hypothetically, would the VP candidate fill the vacancy, by default?
If not, what would happen?

The votes already cast for Biden can't be changed

I was wondering today the same thing. Would the protocol be the same if he voluntarily resigned vs died?

But what would happen in such a situation?

He could flipping die? He’s feeble and under a lot of stress. Playin hypotheticals here.

Why would he drop out? Because his son made a sex tape?

Joe looked pretty bad at the last debate and is and will be under tremendous stress. It's not far fetched that he could die in office.
It is a legit question regardless of the Hunter stuff.

No, I think I the closest would be Horace Greeley dying between the election and the electoral college vote...but he lost in a landslide so it was irrelevant.

Until the EC casts ballots on December 13, the democrats could replace a Dropout of deceased Winning president or Vice President with any member of the DNC. Once the electoral college votes, Kamala would become president elect.

Zero votes have been cast for Joe Biden. Zero votes will be cast for Joe Biden until December 14 when the Electoral College votes. You’re only voting for a particular party’s electors.
Meaning that if a candidate withdraws, the GOP/DNC can do whatever they want with the nominee, and have their electors vote for that person.

Good stuff.
I didn’t know that happened.
There has to be something official about such a scenario.
Was genuinely curious.

They are setting it up for President Harris.

I don’t think it’s ever happened with a presidential nominee. McGovern dropped his vp candidate after the nomination, but that’s about as close as its come. The in this particular case, the DNC leadership would name a candidate.

If the candidate who wins the election dies before the electoral college votes, then the most likely practical result is that deceased candidate’s party would have its electors vote for the VP nominee. But that is not a rule, and ultimately it has never been tested before so it’s up in the air.
Once the EC votes, the same rules of presidential succession apply to the POTUS-elect and VPOTUS—elect as apply to POTUS and VPOTUS. VP elect would become president elect, and would have to nominate/confirm a VP once inaugurated.

Biden is not withdrawing from the election. If he wins and the Democrats retain the House and flip the Senate, there will be no investigations and no impeachment. Thirty will be busy packing the Supreme Court and admitting new states like DC and Puerto Rico.
