They are saying 87 million users had their "private data" breached.
I don't Facebook so I don't know what kind of private data you input to it.
What is the scope?

I'm not sure how any could believe their data is private on a public social network.

I have:
Name
Birth date

Employer
Hometown
I also made the account when I was ~12 and just haven't taken anything down.

In a nutshell...
Some researcher developed an App for Facebook. The App asked a bunch of personality questions. If a user downloaded the App, they gave the developer permission to access their Facebook page, along with the pages of their friends on Facebook. That researcher gave all that data to Cambridge where it was allegedly used for nefarious purposes.
The private data would be the data of those friends that didn't authorize the researcher to access their page.

I don't have FB so it doesn't affect me but FB and media is trying to make a big deal about the Trump campaign getting some of this info but fail to mention that FB GAVE all of this info to Obama and his campaign.

It’s your search histories and page viewing data. Basically what you like and what you search for.
So nothing that google doesn’t already do.
People are butthurt over this because it was tied to a company with ties to Trump’s campaign.
If it was tied to Hillary the media and sky screamers wouldn’t care.
Which is why no one cares about google.

Think about it.
For many FB users, FB knows your name, age, birthday, spouse's name, spouse's age, your children, where you went to school, who your friends are, political affiliation, which FB groups you belong to, and many of the things you like and dislike, at a minimum.

Ads popping up on TDs ten minutes after researching said subject on Google is a good example of what you speak.

1. Facebook has been collecting and selling user's data for a long time.
2. If you have a Facebook account, you've voluntarily signed up for this.
3. Obama used Facebook data extensively in his election campaigns.
4. The only "outrage" is because it was offered to the Trump campaign.

You don't really think this is just about Cambridge right? Anyone who thinks they are the only ones to get their hands on facebook's data is naive.

Data access that helped Obama win in 2012, was offered to trump in 2016.
Someone needs to forge some emails that show.. cnn, msnbc, WaPo, nyt, politico ..abc..etc.. colluding with the Trump campaign in 2016.

Ben Shapiro has the best take on this story - its completely feigned outrage. Everybody has known Facebook's business model since at least 2009 or so.
I personally don't get why Zuckerberg does this "aw shucks" routine. Why doesn't he just say "you all know this is our business model. You praised us and Obama's 2012 campaign when they did virtually the same exact thing."
The closest comparable is the pearl-clutching over Trump's "collusion" with Russia; meanwhile we have concrete proof that Obama/Clinton/Mueller were all involved in selling enriched uranium to Russia without legit Congressional oversight or the American public knowing.
It's all so phony.

It's more about how they track your information. If you go into your account settings (those who have one), select "Ads" and then "Your Information", you'll see that Facebook has algorithms that can identify a ton of information about you based solely on your activity on Facebook. This is the type of information that got breached.
