— here's the man behind it

quote:

Hawaii made waves in June when it passed the first piece of legislation aimed at exploring a niche but growing form of wealth distribution.

The bill, HCR 89, directs the government "to convene a basic economic security working group," a request that can be seen as the first tangible step toward a US basic income program.

quote:

Lee says basic income is one of a few approaches he'll pursue to ensure all Hawaiians have economic security, particularly as automation threatens jobs in the state's service-based economy.

quote:

After first hearing about basic income on Reddit "some years ago," Lee said he became intrigued by the idea of paying people a salary just for being alive. He especially thought about that idea in the context of a shifting American Dream.

quote:

"Pursuing hard work enough to make a decent living no longer applies in an economy in which automation and innovation have taken that away from so many people," he said.

I, too, have a dream of sitting on my arse doing nothing at all and collecting money. Ahhh, America...

Sounds like a great way to keep up the spirit of innovation.

He left off the part that money doesn't just fall from the sky and that the money must be taken from those who work before it can be given to those who don't.

Remember, the government can't give anyone anything it doesn't take from someone else.

Native Hawaiians are absolute deadbeats. They are fat and they are racist and they felt like they were entitled to the islands before Europeans arrived

"basic income" Lol

I'm open to the idea of UBI but only if literally every other entitlement (except for SSDI for those under 18) goes bye bye, and it is only available to those over 18.

Will never, ever happen, so frick your UBI.

This is really going to hurt state income tax revenues. You have a hyper service economy. About 20% of state GDP is tourism. So you're incentivizing people working off the books and collecting their living wage. Service business will be tempted to pay people off the books to keep staff.

Wouldn't surprise me to see a 5% drop in state revenue.

I'm guessing this legislation will end up exactly like the free public health care bill in Cali.

Nice to know. Going to Oahu in a few weeks. Glad I'll be able to save a ton of money on tipping.

It will just restart the process of separating the chaff from the wheat. Some entrepreneurial locals will offer services to make money off of everyone's basic income and become the new evil elites. Economic equality is a myth as long as ambition exists.

Hawaii (or Hawaii supporters) have had decade long protests for Independence. They barely see themselves as a US state.

They do it on the West Coast - in New York City - Washington.

Bill Clinton signed a bill into law apologizing to Hawaii.

I guess the Brits didn't get the memo.

I love Star Trek, but it gave entire generations of humans a ridiculous notion of a realistic future society.

A guaranteed basic income should be the LAW OF THE LAND, as it is, as well as healthcare, and education, a fundamental RIGHT of all Americans.
