Has a parties presidential candidate ever died during a campaign?
Posted by teebro on 7/1/20 at 10:46 pm11
I don't know of a case but there have been many elections in history. I don't consider it likely that Joe's body will giving out before his mind, but if he goes even more mentally vegetative, it will functionally be as though he had died. Does Pelosi and Schumer just pick a new candidate at a convention? When is the last day to legally declare for office?

There is an early '70s novel called Dark Horse by Fletcher Knebel based on this premise
Nominee dies a few weeks before election, minor politician takes his place and is thrown to the wolves

I still believe that Bill came close to getting knocked off in 2016. Hillary had to have been tempted to go for the sympathy "Bill is Dead" bump vote. I think she would have done it but, unlike Trump, she foolishly surrounded herself with 'advisers' who told her what she wanted to hear, so she thought she had already won.
