A rapidly increasing number of American families are opting out of sending their children to school, choosing instead to educate them at home. Homeschooled kids now account for roughly 3 percent to 4 percent of school-age children in the United States, a number equivalent to those attending charter schools, and larger than the number currently in parochial schools.

quote:

Yet Elizabeth Bartholet, Wasserstein public interest professor of law and faculty director of the Law School’s Child Advocacy Program, sees risks for children—and society—in homeschooling, and recommends a presumptive ban on the practice. Homeschooling, she says, not only violates children’s right to a “meaningful education” and their right to be protected from potential child abuse, but may keep them from contributing positively to a democratic society.

quote:

“We have an essentially unregulated regime in the area of homeschooling,” Bartholet asserts. All 50 states have laws that make education compulsory, and state constitutions ensure a right to education, “but if you look at the legal regime governing homeschooling, there are very few requirements that parents do anything.”

That means, effectively, that people can homeschool who’ve never gone to school themselves, who don’t read or write themselves.” In another handful of states, parents are not required to register their children as homeschooled; they can simply keep their kids at home.

The left can't stand the fact they may not be allowed to brainwash even 4% of the population.

THERE CAN BE NO DISSENT WITH LEFTISTS.

I’m gonna go out on a limb and say no parent that can’t read or write is home schooling their child.

This is the real reason. If I was to have school age children I would now home school them.

She does bring up a few good points. Homeschool is not very regulated. My sister in law started homeschooling her kids because she couldn’t get them to school on time. They really don’t do much as far “schooling” goes.

I don’t agree with outlawing homeschooling but there needs to be more accountability within the homeschool system.

I agree, ever meet a real home schooled kid?

I was in college when I met and actually talked to a homeschooled kid. Was the strangest kid I ever met..

Kid had zero social skills...

No we dont need the government raising children. You must not be very aware of how much gets done in public schools.

Why? Do you actually think the schools "teach" kids that aren't interested in learning? If your sister's kids are good readers and inquisitive, then they can probably learn just as much reading and exploring independently. Are they getting into Harvard? Maybe not. Are they going to be smart enough to make decisions and get through life? Yes.

Doesn’t take a genius to homeschool children.

Actually I do. I work in the public school system and believe me when I tell you there is a percentage of parents (and it grows bigger every year) that should never try to homeschool their kids.

I guess kids just gonna have to get a brake tag. Can't have unregulated children.

They couldn’t even get out of bed to get to school in the first place...so...how successful do you think they are going to be?

Anyone who sees how much time is wasted and even solid public or private schools thinks about home schooling.

I tend to agree that there is a societal/citizenship argument you can make about kids growing up and not spending any time at all with persons in other socioeconmic groups or from other parts of the country.

You can solve that with some kind of national service requirement when kids graduate form high school. I don't think we as a country are ready for that, but kids being home schooled - no beef with that at all and admire the folks giving it a go.

And you see homeschooling as a threat?

Shocker.

And unfortunately their kids should fail and the parents will see their own failures.

We cant create auxiliary parenting indefinitely. All we end up doing to subsidizing and encouraging irresponsible behavior.
