It was built as a church. It will always be a church, regardless of how it's used now.

If they had recognized papal supremacy none of this would have happened. We take care of our own.

Better the turban than the miter.

We lost a church, but kept the Church.

Hopefully, you're not referring to Istanbul as a shithole, because its anything but.

It was a shithole when I was there in the early 1980s

I was there the week the Marines had their Barracks Truck Bombed in Beirut. We left Istanbul and then did gunfire support for 86 straight days off the coast of Beirut, while the marines were evacuated

Wow! No wonder you have such poor association with Istanbul.
Thanks for your service.

1000 years as a cathedral. 500 years as a mosque. 80 years or so as a museum.

I don't recall it being an overly impressive museum.

His full name in his time would have been Yeshua ben Yosef: Jesus son of Joseph, since Joseph was legally considered his father.

That’s not really Istanbul. I stayed there for about 3 months. Left right before the 2016 military coup.

Other than Turkey being on shaky ground politically and having an insane Monterrey policy….Istanbul is amazing. One of my favorite cities.

You know how when your spend more than a week in Europe, and all the cathedrals start to look the same?

This one is the exception.

Something of a shithole, IMHO

Memories are long and transferred generationally. There's a rather large Greek community in Melbourne Australia where my great grandfather migrated to and the older folks there are semi insane when you mention Turks....or even Russians. There is an intense dislike for both.....for different reasons.

If you want to read about a slaughter, read about the conquering of Constantinople, especially the attack on the Hagia Sofia.

This is what happens when you support the mohammedans in a war against Roman Catholic Europe.

In Hebrew, yes.

But Yeshua’s first language was almost certainly Aramaic, yielding Yeshua bar Yusef … rather than Yeshua ben Yusef.

Begun by Constantine to become the world's first massive domed structure that placed it as one of the 7 Wonders of the Modern World.

Is it at all beyond the realm of possibility that St. Peter's in Rome could eventually meet the same end.

It is amazing to me that some basement dwellers, who have never been anywhere or ever done anything, will argue with someone who has first hand experience with something.

Was this the price of having Turkey OK Finland and Norway to NATO?

Norway is a founding member of NATO, and Hagia Sophia has been a mosque (again) for some time now.
