GOP senators pitch immigration-wall deal
A pair of Republican senators introduced legislation on Friday that would pair President Trump's border request with a fix for an Obama-era immigration program, as lawmakers hunt for an end to the partial shutdown.

The bill from Sens. Rob Portman (R-Ohio) and Jerry Moran (R-Kansas) would include a $25 billion trust fund for border security, including fencing and physical barriers, while codifying the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program for current recipients.

The bill would be unlikely to get enough support from Democrats to get the 60 votes in the Senate—much less pass through the Democratically controlled House. Portman introduced similar legislation last year but it was panned by Democratic leadership.

Trump already offered them some DREAMERS/DACA. They didn't care then and don't now. They really think they are big shots now but they are not. Too bad they will make America suffer acting all progressive RESIST as their handlers (billionaires) are telling them.

Trump has been clear that he won't sign anything dealing with DACA until after the SC ruling.

The Repubs are doing this on purpose to make the Dems look bad, becasue we know the dems want accept it. Its a "great deal" that to the average person looks and sounds reasonable.

What is the Democratic response to the bill? Are they opposed to the $25 billion?

This seems like a natural compromise to me. Both sides need to learn that you have to give a little, and no matter how much your base bitches for two days, that they will still vote for you. Pandering to the base is not required 100% of the time, and certainly not in off-years with no election.

Trump isn't going to agree to this. DACA is a no-no for him.

Quite the negotiator. My way or the highway.

I’m willing to talk about DACA.

BUT.

The wall has to come first before any codification of legal status.

Reagan got burned by trusting the Dems. Trump appears to have learned before it.

Dems are convinced that Trump will have any emergency deceleration to build the wall overturned. I've seen it pitched that the Dems will offer up a CR or Budget and tell Trump to go the NE route, a win-win? However, they know that, even if Trump wins in the long run, that the NE will be immediately challenged and then bogged down in the courts. Trump, obviously being too smart to fall in that trap, will likely decline to sign any CR or budget deal without wall funding, even if he goes the NE route.

Let’s see if Trump will stick to his guns on keeping the government closed.

IMHO, the Dems have far more to lose through either taking direct losses to their base, people figuring out what the government doesn’t affect, and people figuring out what the government DOES affect which it really shouldn’t.

For instance, beer producers are bitching right now because the government won’t approve the labels to go on their bottles. Is that something that really needs direct government oversight?

Democrats in the house have already voted down deals that included DACA. I think they claimed only 10% would actually get citizenship with the requirements. That makes me think most of them live off the government or are criminals.
