These guys are a bunch of bums

American ports are some of the worst in the developed world because the union has fought against automation. The economic inefficiencies get passed down to consumers through higher shipping costs.

Time to fire them all and replace with these guys.

Only reason Dems are pissed at these guys is the upcoming election.

If they would just lay off the peyote for a while they could see more clearly.

The funny thing is their demands of over 50% increase in wages over next 5yrs is exactly what is going to lead to automation.

Cut their nose off to spite their face

That's the part that's blowing my mind. They are ACCELLERATING Automation with this shite. They'll get their raise but be out of a job by the next contract. They can try to stick it to em on automation to try to hold it off but the companies need to make that a non starter.

And the leader bragging about making us all hurt... good luck dude. That was not the smartest thing you ever said.

I guess the guys do not release that do not need automation, their benefactors just imported an entire labor force that will be cheaper than and they do not even realize it.

I'm surprised he didn't tone it down a bit for PR purposes. That guy is straight out of the 1970's.

I don't know anything about dockworkers unions, but sort of amusing to see the anger at people wanting raises when half the threads on the board are about how bad inflation is.

Hope they are curtailing personal spending and increasing their 401K/Roth contributions to max during this 5 years.

We are steadily getting to the 2 class society of service folks versus upper management foiks. The bottoms wages are rising while the middle stays the same and costs increase.

Squeezing that middle either down to the bottom or the top depending on how much of a savage you are with finances.

The guys at the top will be retired on an island in 5 years kicking in even higher pension payments based on last few years of income.

It's a calculation based on two self-supporting things and not on automation:

1. Political support from the left with reciprocating votes/endorsements/donations.

2. Closed shops allowed by state laws.

As long as they have the political support to maintain those closed shops no scabs, robots, or migrants can dislodge them. The same problem exists in other industries where closed shops also exist, the steel industry for example and their lack of interest in modernizing to compete with Japan, China, & the UK.

If it wasn't for laws that allowed for this automation would have overtaken them a while back and every demand would be met with innovation, not increased costs to the consumer.

I think this strike could easily be broken by, in right-to-work states, using a combination of scabs and 'emergency' upgrades in the automation arena.

It doesn't necessarily solve the logistical/supply problem. What that does is decrease the absolute political support of unions at the voter level and thus at the party level. And it is that political support, as above, that is why such as this can happen in the first place.

Pension plans without any existing workers kicking money in tend to run out of cash quickly.

When full automation kicks in, the pension plan will be in trouble!
