I recently presented a lecture for the University of Colorado, Boulder's Benson Center for the Study of Western Civilization. In this hour-long talk, available in video on Youtube and in text at Quillette, I describe and lament the constraint which political correctness imposes on vigorous public discussion about the causes of and remedies for persistent racial inequality.

A friend of his objected to what he said in the lecture, and Loury posted this open letter to the friend:

quote:

I'm not only scared about where things are going. I'm in despair. And, I'll admit to a bit of anger.

I think the summer of 2020 was a disaster for the future of "race" in the country. I think it reflects Obama's mishandling of Ferguson and Baltimore and Sanford, FL. I think it bespeaks the complete bankruptcy of the political governing forces representing the interest of blacks.

I'm unreservedly cynical about "civil rights" claims. Mississippi crusades were a half-century ago—as long as from Appamattox to Versailles!

The race debate has become a distraction—and a hustle. Make the social contract better—for all Americans—and you'll solve the only part of the racial disparity problem that warrants government involvement.

These killings by cops and their aftermath are national theater—a macabre enactment of lies, bluffs and self-delusions... The impositions of police are not the first, or second or third-order factors in determining the quality of black life—way behind families and schools and jobs...

Of course I know that structures matter. But, I think a central fact of our time is the failure of blacks at every level—from criminal behavior to performance on college exams—to measure-up to the plentiful opportunities at hand. A racial blame game has emerged to cover these failures which increasingly seems to corrupt everything.

And the tragedy is, I'm the only one who's saying so...

Another out of touch elitist douche.

What arrogance you'd have to have to even utter that phrase. "I'm the only one" - implies that this moron hasn't been paying attention at all to the political climate in this country.

Sounds like two well-paid liberal retards going at it online, while small businesses got shut down because of COVID and churches were cancelled while strip clubs and casinos were deemed safe because they're better connected politically.

Neither of these douchebags should be teaching classes of any sort. Frick them both.

Does he think all of the racial disharmony is organic? Or does he understand that Soros and his followers(media) stir these troubles on purpose?

November 2008 was the peak for race relations in America and it is likely only going downhill from here. He’s right that 2020 was pretty much the killshot

Glenn Loury is WOKE in the right way.

Hope he can remain strong and keep speaking out about what is REALLY hurting black people in this country. His voice is desperately needed.

Well, you should find out. He should be on your list. He's a professor at Brown, but was famously the first black economics professor at Harvard in the 80s.

Calm down. Loury is a voice of reason. He was using obvious hyperbole and isn't that far off considering he's clearly referring to academia.

He has a group of academics who fight this BS including opposing the 1619 project, so he isn't being literal when he says he is the only one.

What other prominent black men are saying what Loury is saying?

Disagree. Sounds to me like he’s totally in touch with today’s political climate of woke victim culture.

Sup. Loury and McWhorter have been particularly objective and honest recently about the Ferguson situation.

There are a handful and he knows them very well. He does many podcasts with people like Thomas Sowell, John McWhorter, and Coleman Hughes.

His use of the line, “I’m the only one” is rhetorical, obviously.
