GA Dems attack "Mary the Republican" in Atlanta mayoral race

Georgia Democrats spent more than $165,000 to paint Mary Norwood as a closet Republican during her 2009 run for mayor. The party has largely avoided attacking the city councilwoman as she rose in the polls in this election – until now.
The Democratic Party of Georgia on Thursday launched a full-scale online attack against Norwood, labeling “Mary the Republican” as a far-right conservative who has a web of connections to GOP figures.
The site highlights Norwood’s high-profile Republican supporters, her hiring of conservative operatives and her refusal to endorse Democrat Jon Ossoff in Georgia’s nationally-watched 6th District race.
“Atlanta has had a Democratic mayor since 1881, and we’re not about to let Mary Norwood and the Republican Party steal that office,” said Michael Smith, the party’s spokesman. “Mary Norwood is funded by the GOP, and then she turns around and hands the money right back to Georgia’s far-right element.”
Norwood, who calls herself an independent, has held a consistent double-digit lead in polls since losing that 2009 race to Kasim Reed thanks to support across the political spectrum. An 11Alive poll this week showed she led the field among voters who identify as both strong Republicans and strong Democrats.

Republicans be evil white men, the ex-first lady told me it is so. They will paint her how ever it fits what they want to influence the vote. It is what they do.

We love Mary Norwood and the fact that whites will vote in blocs when situations require them to

The clown show continues in Atlanta.
I don’t think their pushing the facts that the mayor has been black for 40 years and a Dem for 130+ years helps them. It opens them up to an argument of “It’s time for a change.”
I still think she loses in the runoff but the party is scared of her.

They pulled this same shite against her in 2009 and she barely lost in the runoff to Kasim Reed. I think there might be a different outcome this go-around.

Why do Dems hate women?

Is Atlanta is more black now than it was then?

They don't want whitey representing them...although the proggies that live in town could show up and make it close.

Nope, ATL's black population share has been dropping for years. It was at 54% in 2010 and has only continued to decline since then.

The office is not property of any party, it's the property of the voters. If they vote a party out, it's not "stealing".
Rhetoric like this is what annoys people with politics.

she should win then. Serious candidates who come up just short in previous elections have a VERY good track record their next go round

Unfortunately, the loudest sector of whites replacing blacks are liberal millennials. And some of those people are probably particularly receptive to arguments about not turning over the city to white leadership (in other words, they're pathetic self-loathing pussies)
But, I think "loudness" is important. I think people somewhat underestimate the number of SEC kids who go and live in places like Old Fourth Ward or Kirkwood. Plus, this shouldn't be a Hillary vs. Trump type of scenario, it will hopefully be a (fingers crossed) a Mary vs. Aman/Bottoms/Mitchell scenario.

Good analysis. Yet 90% of those folks would cry racism if given the chance.

I've been saying for several years that Atlanta is on the verge of having a white mayor. Mary is going to win. She has substantial support among segments of the black population too.

Mary vs. Aman would have heads explode.

Atlanta has such great potential to be better...Just needs an administration that isn't crooked and people that can manage money. Changes to Atlanta City schools and the crooks running that is needed as well.

Yeah if I had to pick the order of preference, it'd probably be 1) Mary 2) Ceasar 3) Peter
But I'd 100% take Norwood vs. Aman for the lulz

Norwood is going to win the primary with the most votes, but lose the election.

We'll see. Bottoms is a pretty weak runoff challenger.
