From the Peterson thread, 'whelp?'

I saw several posters using the term 'whelp' or 'welp'. What the hell is that? Autocorrect from their device?

Is that some sort of bastardization of 'welt'?

A whelp is a puppy.
Maybe AP gave the boy some puppies to apologize for the beatings...

though come to think of it, I have heard whelp used to describe a playful or rascally young boy...
