Monroe itself certainly isn't much of a metropolis, but rather it's the metropolitan statistical area that bumps the population number. West Monroe and beyond (west Ouachita Parish) northern Ouachita Parish (Sterlington), Richwood, and the jewel of the entire situation....Swartz and surrounding eastern Ouachita Parish.

This. Tons of former Monroe residents now live in West Monroe, Calhoun, & Sterlington. Many got out of Funroe as it just wasn't fun any more with all the crime, terrible leadership, & companies leaving. It is going to be bad when Century makes it official & moves the headquarters to Denver.

In one of the televised debates, Mayo tried his best to play the race card against Mr. Ellis. Mr Ellis responded he wasn't racist and was opposed to anyone that was racist supporting his campaign. He then told Mayor Mayo that he and his wife had adopted a young African American young girl.

Ah makes sense now

That is probably one thing Mayo is relieved he won't have to deal with.

I'm not sure what Ellis' position and strategy is on that, and I'm sure he had to address it. Hopefully he has some good ideas on the subject, but I just can't envision anything short of luring a not necessarily comparable but a large and viable company to the area that will save it from damn near going the way of Bastrop, on a little larger scale.

It can't do much worse. From time to time I check housing prices in the from the river at the garden district, from Forsythe to the river/bayou and then Little Cuba/Deborah Drive and it amazes me how low some of those properties are selling for... right up to the point where I start thinking about all the businesses that have left over the last 20-30 years and not been sufficiently replaced.

He has a LOT of work ahead of him.

Friday is 100% honky. A good ole Rayvegas baw. I honestly didn’t think he would win, much less trounce Mayo. That’s a good thing because Mayo is atrocious. I assume the heat and covid kept the brothas from getting out and voting.

Believe it or not any elections throughout Mayo's tenure that were somewhat closely contested before this one were candidates put up by a rather prominent (some would say infamous) Monroe family with all sorts of business interests who would put up a candidate that presented a challenge to Mayo with the black/Democrat vote. Many in that particular voting bloc saw Mayo as catering to the rich and "elite" from the famed North Monroe.

Not sure I follow you. It’s true that Eddie Hakim has been trying to find someone who
Could beat Mayo for the last 20 years. Until now that hasn’t worked because Monroe is 65% black. This go around they didn’t turn out and vote for him. I would have lost some money betting on this election

The point is north Monroe has put most of it's weight behind Mayo all these years and that's why he was mayor for as long as he was, not due to south Monroe. North Monroe finally grew weary of Mayo and went all in for Ellis.

All the small business owners I know in Monroe seem to have been all about him. They’re all MAGA too, so we’ll see. I followed his campaign on Facebook this whole time, he seems legit and judging from the comments his campaign page would get had support all sides of the political spectrum, different races, and most especially business owners and their employees.

Good for them. All I know about Monroe is it having some good places to stop and eat when going through it. Those places may not be in Monroe proper but they will be better off with a better mayor in the area.

Did they have a realistic option not to? Doesn't necessarily mean they liked him. I know many people that live north of DeSiard St. and none of them wanted him as mayor but 64% of the population being black, yes, the southside vote had a lot to do with him getting reelected.

For many years Mayo had a great relationship with North Monroe. Partly from his own actions and partly from an "I'm not Lumumba" effect. The Farrakhan shitshow was his attempt to insulate himself from criticism from black leaders that he only cared about North Monroe. He thought he could play if off to whites with a wink and a nod as just political theater but that stink lingered. He ended up alienating every group outside of city employees. He was a good mayor once but incumbency breeds arrogance at an ever increasing rate.
