Support for #AB5 could end up costing Democrats some House seats in California that swung blue in 2018.
Freelancers are not happy about this law at all. Internal Democratic polling has the law very unpopular in several purple districts in Southern California
For those who don't know, AB5 is the law (written by unions) that effectively bans 1099 and freelance workers. Unions believe that by making every worker in california an employee, thus giving them a right to unionize, it will result in massive increase in union participation and union dues.
The law has been a disaster. Because shifting a worker from a independent contractor to an employee means a huge increase in costs, there has been a ton of job loss in industries with significant 1099 workers. (theater, arts, therapeutic massage centers, etc).
The law is so bad that dems in the state house are already trying to modify it to create exceptions.
the law's popularity has tanked into the low 30s because of the sad stories of freelance workers losing their jobs.
Didn't dems in New Orleans try to enact something like this a few years ago at the city level?

Great news! I’m not giving up on retaking the house

As a literary device, irony is a contrast or incongruity between expectations for a situation and what is reality. This can be a difference between the surface meaning of something that is said and the underlying meaning. It can also be a difference between what might be expected to happen and what actually occurs.

Look, I don't celebrate ANYONE losing their job, but it is a bit comical that the industries hit hardest are the industries that are known for leftism (theatre, freelance journalism, etc)

I’m in California working as a 1099 right now. The company is looking into signing me as a W2. There’s are about 80% of 1099 leaving at the end of the month.

Biden came out today publicly supporting AB5 law.

I love this story because it really underscored how moronic the folks at Vox are.

Gig workers’ win in California is a victory for workers everywhere
After two hours of debate Tuesday, it happened: The California Senate voted on AB 5. It passed.
Democratic lawmakers applauded. Supporters of the bill cheered online.
“I have tears in my eyes and goosebumps on my limbs,” wrote Veena Dubal, a law professor at University of California Hastings.
AB 5’s passage — which Gov. Gavin Newsom is expected to sign — could easily be seen as just another progressive victory in California. But it is more than that. It is a historic moment for the US labor movement too.

There’s even a congressional version that mimics AB 5, called the Workplace Democracy Act, introduced by Sen. Bernie Sanders. The bill would require all employers to use the same strict standard that California uses to determine if someone is an employee or an independent contractor. Now that California has its win, it may only be a matter of time until workers across the country have theirs too.

Vox Media to cut hundreds of freelance jobs ahead of changes in California gig economy laws
Hundreds of freelance writers at Vox Media, primarily those covering sports for the SB Nation site, will lose their jobs in the coming months as the company prepares for a California law to go into effect that will force companies to reclassify contractors in the state as employees.
fricking morons

I read some analysis on some conservative site that said 9 were in play. Some seemed "optimistic" but several didn't.
