Depending on who you believe, the size of the protests range from over 1M to 9M people yesterday and Thursday.

National strikes were called, more national strikes planned for next week and every week thereafter. Flights are cancelled, trains and buses are stopped, services are suspended.

Riots have broken out. The Bordeaux city hall has been burned.

Macron narrowly survived a vote of no confidence on Monday by 9 votes. Protesters vow to continue and amp up the pressure until he is removed.

King Charles has had to cancel his first state visit due to the widespread destruction and lawlessness.

I absolutely hate to see a beautiful country with a rich history get vandalized like this. Macron has lost control and should have been gone a long time ago.

I don't support the protesters' 'cause' or methods, but I don't support Macron either.

They voted for him over Le Pen, even though her economic platform is something out of a trade union Communist's playbook. Serves them right.

It was funny to watch the U.S. press spin that she was far-right.

"Far right" in the modern parlance means social and border issues, because all the pols are "all a bunch of socialists", to quote Rothband.

If I was president of France I’d say fine take your lower retirement age. Then I’d resign to my mansion and millions and watch as the system totally collapses in 10 years.
This might eventually come to America although not as severe. Any working adult under 40 right now should not plan on getting SSI or entitlement insurance at retirement.

If 9 million citizens disagree with their elected government, it’s hard not to support their cause when they demonstrate against it. I obviously don’t support burning and other destructive methods but strikes can be very effective. 9 million people is a lot.

What made this controversial move more problematic was how he rammed it through on a procedural technicality without a vote.

Their cause is a proposed 2 year raise in the retirement age.

France has long been known for having one of the shortest work weeks in the world, as well as one of the earliest retirement ages. I DO NOT agree with this agenda and the fact that the country goes broke as more workers retire so early and there are fewer younger workers working to support an overburdened retirement system. THAT is the agenda, not the burning and looting, those are methods. To use a word I hate, their agenda is unsustainable. Italy has a similar issue.

My wife I went to Paris in 2019 and they were in the middle of their yellow vest protests. The French are good at that.

I can't debate numbers or claim to know the details regarding Social Security running out, but I do know I've been hearing this for 20 years.
Is there any way to accurately forecast when it will run dry?
I am sincerely asking.

Historically France isn't good at dealing with external threats, but they know how deal with internal threats. I hope they eat their politicians.

This was the common feeling when I started working 25 years ago. Nothing new.
