will be interesting to see if he gets charged with anything

The moment a Florida city commissioner shot and killed a man suspected of shoplifting from his store is seen in a stunning surveillance video released by authorities Monday, as prosecutors weigh whether the gun-toting store owner should face charges.

Lakeland City Commissioner Michael Dunn confronted Cristol Lopez at the Vets Army & Navy surplus store on Oct. 3 after Dunn suspected Lopez of shoplifting, the Lakeland Police Department said.

Police said at the time that Lopez -- a 50-year-old homeless felon who was staying at a nearby shelter -- had tried to leave the store with a hatchet down his pants, FOX13 reported.

Can't watch the video, but if this guy was just shoplifting, then shooting him seems a bit much.

As I understand it, under Florida's law then Stand Your Ground law not only allows you to defend yourself with lethal force it allows you to defend your property and business with that force.

Since this guy appears to be the owner of the business, it may indeed be a case of stand your ground despite the fact that the thief appears to be trying to escape the store rather than threaten the owner.

looks like the guy was trying to get away, but if the law allows the defense of your property & business, I don't see how they can charge the guy

he SHOULD NOT be charged in any event

this episode may do more to curb crime than anything else we have seen recently

Is that what was in the guy's hand that he raised up to store owner as he was trying to stop him from fleeing?

Why would a homeless dude want with a hatchet other than to cut something up? Another homeless person maybe? That shite happens.

Why is it, there always seems to be more sympathy for a criminal killed in an unfair fight than for innocent victims of violent assaults?

While I can't say I'm completely comfortable with the guy getting shot dead for this, I do think putting it all on the shooter ('Is it worth it to kill a guy for a $10 hatchet') is sort of BS in the scenario where the thief has a fricking gun pointed at him and is obviously being told to stop, yet keeps walking out the place with the stolen item. Seems the question should be better directed to the thief as to whether it was really "worth it" to him at that point.
