First flight since Shut Down

Not posting to bash either side, but figured I’d give an update on if anything has really changed with lines or level of service. Will update OP from airport to airport.
Dulles:
6:40 am - TSA PreCheck Line is long, but that’s not atypical.
6:50 am - TSA dudes were in good mood. One middle aged, the other few were older guys. All smooth. In truth, it seems the agents are normally younger, but maybe I just caught the old guy shift.
Additional observations:
- Air travel is not a pain due to problems with their service. It’s 95% on the customer. People attempting to force giant roller bags as carry-ons to avoid baggage fees are delaying our takeoff substantially while the crew sorts it out. Check your bags people. Flying costs money; taking too many clothes or packing a big bag costs more. That’s just the way it is.
Final edit: I had zero problems flying today. I fly very often for work and honestly I couldn’t tell the difference as a customer. Kudos to all those that handled security and air traffic control for doing their jobs despite the situation. Were it up to me, they’d all be getting paychecks. True professionals.

I flew yesterday and it appeared that they were short a person or two. It took longer than usual with the TSA agents moving around to switch places when someone had to be physically checked. This was at a small airport in Killeen, TX. I will see how how a larger airport handles incoming traffic tomorrow. I am in Ft Lauderdale, FL and will be flying to Atlanta. I will get to see on Friday how the Atlanta airport handles the incoming traffic as well. I will say that the TSA agents were in high spirits and very pleasant to be around. I guess when you are short a few people they don't have time for anything else but to focus on team work to keep the line moving.

You won’t feel the full impacts of the shutdown until you walk through a national park and see a trashbin with a Slurpee cup lying next to it.

I’ll hit Dulles, Houston and San Antonio today. I tend to pick early morning flights so unless I have a connector I usually avoid the crowds. That said, Dulles can still get busy. Atlanta could be a good test to see if anything is slowing down when you have to process through TSA on Friday. It’s been a year or so since I’ve last flown out of San Antonio and unless it’s a usual airport for me the others kind of run together. No idea what “typical” is there.

Flew out of ATL the other day.
Since TSA was down a person or 2, they didn't have the one lady whose job is to yell at you about laptops and shoes.
It was nice.

Use TSA Pre-Check and avoid that altogether.

The MAGA workers are the better workers and they are the ones going to work.

Air Traffic is working 43,000 flights per day and moving 2.6 million passengers per day. The National Airspace System is by far the busiest air traffic System in the world.
Morale is in the tank. Another missed paycheck, which is very likely, will future erode morale.

I fly every week. No issues at O’Hare or PIT.
I thank the TSA people when I encounter them.

There is no basis to this. I’m sure the ones that can continue to work without pay are the ones who can financially make it work. If I had to quit to find a new job because I ran out of money, there isn’t enough MAGA in the world that would keep me working for free.
To be clear, I’m for paying all federal workers during this shutdown through a CR. It’s unAmerican to work someone without pay. That said, I’m trying to keep this thread about the conditions on the ground so the effects to the traveler is known. Obviously, the workers are getting screwed, but that’s for a different thread.

When the next check is missed, the conditions on the ground will dramatically change.

While unfortunate, it’s just not the primary concern. There are more important things at stake.

Every time you get in that line 80% of the people are just standing around not actually doing anything so yeah, a couple of people not showing up to work probably won't have any effect.

It took my wife almost 90 minutes to get through a TSA checkpoint at SEATAC on Friday.

SeaTac only has 80 gates. Tell those hippies to get their crap together. I fly at least twice per week. I haven’t noticed a thing. Though I haven’t been to SeaTac lately.

Holding my families livelihood hostage IS the primary concern. I’m not working all these planes just for fun. I’m trying to pay bills. It is a lot of fun, though.

They should give 2 check-on bags for free and charge for carry on bags...it would make boarding quicker.
