Felons trying to buy new weapons

Over 100,000 convicted felons attempted to illegally purchase firearms each year during President Barack Obama’s eight years in the oval office, and the Obama administration did virtually nothing about it.
The Obama Department of Justice (DOJ) only "considered prosecuting" approximately 30 to 40 convicted felons per year who attempted to illegally purchase firearms — roughly .04%.

Democrats don’t give a shite about gun regulation. They just see it as an excuse to draw republicans as evil men controlled by the NRA who don’t care if kids die. If they cared they would have passed gun regulation when they had Obama plus congress

They probably didn't do squat for time. Probably got on probation after a couple months or even with no time.

If you want to drastically reduce crime in America, put people who commit crimes in prison for a long arse time. Most murderers dont start out murdering. They do other petty shite and slowly build up to murder.
Put them in prison early (before the murder) and you know that they will not be in public committing other crimes.

They didn't want to do anything about it. They wanted more people getting around the laws so they could make the case that gun laws didn't work. If you want to ban guns is there a better situation that to have ex-cons purchase them and use them in crimes to prove a point?

It all depends what crimes we are talking about, but I'm not sure that is the answer. I think the current prison system turns people violent. Many non-violent offenders come out of prison as violent people because of the prison environment. You almost have to become violent to survive. Giving extended sentences in the current system would significantly increase the chances of turning someone violent, IMO. Prison is called "Criminal College," because many inmates learn how to increase their criminal skills. More time would not help with this aspect, either.
I think non-violent offenders and violent offenders should be housed separately. Any act of violence in the non-violence housing gets you immediately moved to the violent wing. Someone that is not a violent or serial offender does not usually deserve an excessive prison sentence. The majority of mandatory minimum sentences I have seen have been absurdly lengthy. I think increased vocational programs would help the situation as well.
Maybe even this wouldn't work, but I wouldn't want to live in a society that gives draconian sentences for somewhat minor infractions.

Are convicted felons really a group that is perpetrating a lot of these crimes? I bet most of them just don't know that they are not allowed to purchase a firearm.

Both kids that were involved in the Jonesboro school shooting in 1998 are out of prison. They both have been arrested on gun charges since their release.

Felons getting used guns somewhere under the radar is bad enough, but being brazen enough or dumb enough to try and pass a federal background check for a new weapon should get them even more serious fines and longer jail terms.
