The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued an emergency authorization on Friday for a new coronavirus test that can deliver results in just 5 minutes and is so small that it can be used nearly anywhere.

Abbott Laboratories announced that their new test is the fastest test in the world, able to deliver “positive results in as little as five minutes and negative results in 13 minutes.”

“The COVID-19 pandemic will be fought on multiple fronts, and a portable molecular test that offers results in minutes adds to the broad range of diagnostic solutions needed to combat this virus,” said Robert B. Ford, president and chief operating officer, Abbott. “With rapid testing on ID NOW, healthcare providers can perform molecular point-of-care testing outside the traditional four walls of a hospital in outbreak hotspots.”

quote:

CNBC reported that the company plans to start providing 50,000 of the newly approved tests per day for officials to use.

Which means more positives (to be expected) but dear Lord people will flip out even more just because the number rises without following any other info.

Here in Jax, they just approved testing even if you don’t have a fever. Testing must have caught up.

Fantastic.

Wonder what their accuracy thresholds were? I’ve seen lots of reports about test kits in other countries not being the most accurate. I don’t know enough about the different methods to know if they were similar to these molecular tests?

It's going to be all about the positive/death ratio.

The more positives and less deaths will show us the virus isnt as potent as the media made it out to be.

Then I guess it's your job to lay down the truth.

I’ve tried. I gave up. Seriously I did my best. Uninformed. Uneducated. Most want something for nothing.

That's because those tests come from China.

I have a sophomoric question to you scientific/medical peeps. How long could one test positive if they have or have had it? At what point would you no longer test positive.

They say it takes about 20 days to run its course without any special treatment.

Supposedly the hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin combo has the ability take make it less than 20, some even say 6 days.

I saw somewhere it could be up to a week, but in most cases 48 hrs after zero symptoms.
