Public genealogy database is used to solve ANOTHER cold case 45 years after a married couple were murdered in their Montana home in 1973

Investigators solved a double slaying that occurred more than 45 years ago after using a genealogy database to match DNA from the crime scene with the genetic profile of the now-deceased suspect, a Montana sheriff said Monday.

Daily Mail

Amazes me that the American public is so full of rubes.

Has anyone on this site sent their $100 to get their genealogy determined? Please tell me you are not this dumb.

These companies, like 23 & Me, sprouted up with Madison Avenue slick advertising under the guise to get a nice report that shows what minuscule percentage whatever area of the world they may have come from.

These companies are FBI fronts to get as many rubes as possible to voluntarily hand over their DNA for the purpose of starting a national database.

quote:

In brief: FamilyTreeDNA, one of the big players in the consumer genetic testing market, has granted the FBI access to its database of genetic profiles. This will more than double the amount of consumer genetic information the FBI has access to. The company currently has DNA samples for nearly 2 million people and confirmed this late week that their data is now accessible by the FBI.

Really???? It was just proven that the Russian hoax was about as real as Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny. A large portion of America believed that bs for over 2 years

Keep telling yourself that they only want to solve cold cases with your DNA.

Yeah let's trust the very law enforcement and prosecutors that spent two years trying to overthrow the President.

Serious question-

What is it you are worried they would do with it?

Clone people without their knowledge or consent. That is the end game here.

For the record- you have to opt in to allow it on the public database. So there’s no coercion. Second of all, with 2 million samples, I would suspect that have genetic connections ( matching DNA strands) for most Americans. There will be a lot of hits and they will run down thousands of killers and rapists off what is already there. That genie is out of the bottle

I don't see the problem here. I would love to hang out with myself.

I would also make my double go to work for me.

Doesn’t really matter what I, or you, think either way. All it takes is one person in your immediate family tree and your profile is matched anyway.

I tend to worry about things I can control, and this doesn’t really move the needle much for me

They already had mine. And I put my family on notice that it was time to work out a deal if they had any dark crimes to report.

It doesn’t need to be your immediate family. A 3rd or 4th cousin will do . From there they can track it down geographically, by family tree, age, etc with good detective work. And once they narrow it to a reasonable number of suspects they can get a DNA from a coke can or cigarette. Boom you are on death row . Because some 4th cousin in Philly you never knew existed did a DNA test.
