No surprise to the "golden diagnosis" effect.

Fact Check: Trump Claims Doctors ‘Get More Money’ for Coronavirus Deaths
quote:
During a hearing by the House Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Crisis on July 31, Rep. Blaine Luetkemeyer (R-MO) asked Redfield, the director of the nation’s leading public health agency, to comment on the “perverse incentive” for medical personnel to claim someone died of the Chinese instead of other diseases. “I think you’re correct in that we’ve seen this in other disease processes too, the CDC chief responded, noting that during the HIV epidemic, hospitals preferred the HIV classification over a heart attack “because there’s greater reimbursement.”
Redfield did not indicate all doctors and hospitals are overcounting virus deaths, but rather that there is a monetary incentive for them to do so.
He suggested there is no way to know for sure to what extent doctors and hospitals are taking advantage of the incentive to classify the cause of death as the Chinese virus.

It's not as prevalent now but I know for a fact that hospitals were begging for China virus patients to get paid.
Deaths were also. It's crazy. My wife worked 2 travel ICU nursing assignments to "hotbeds" and everything about the way hospitals did things was odd. They wanted that money.

In May. I was hospitalized for pancreatitis. Scary shite. I had been in a few days before for gall bladder removal. When I came back for the pancreatitis, my covid test, that had tested negative, tested positive so I was in a covid unit for 5 days fighting pancreatitis and a positive covid test.
During the time I was there, I never had a symptom or a blood marker than indicated I had covid. I eventually took two more tests and both were negative.
Want to know what my discharge papers say? "Hospitalized for exposure to Covid-19"
I had a false positive test but my 5 days cost 90K

That may be true, but what about profit sharing for board members and owners? The diagnostic code would dictate what the billing rate is. Could there be cases where this would be advantageous for a facility?

There’s definitely fraud afoot.

Someone I know is in hospital with Guillain-Barre and Covid. According to mayo website g-b has a 4-7% mortality rate.
If someone with these conditions died, how would you classify cause of death and who decides?
