Natural rights. Things you would have in absence of government. Read John Locke's writings.

You've not read the preamble to the US Declaration of Independence? They are spelled out pretty clearly.

So the Creator grants every person these rights no matter their gender or race?

Consider yourself on a desert island - everything you do there is your God-given right.

If you find something that you know you ought NOT to do - that is a hint as to what one of God's Law might resemble.

If you find another person in your wanders - how you treat that person defines how your definition of what God-given rights may restrict your actions.

Civilizations go on for thousands of years observing how successful citizens treat one another - the wise one try to define the limits of those interactions and they become a "God-given right."

If you have a consicience, you don't need someone to define a God-given right for you in order to know how to act.

In other words, they are NATURAL for MORAL people.

and they are put into place to provide a guide for AMORAL people to try and live within - or face exclusion from polite society.

Our Declaration of Independence did as good a job of encapsulating it as has been written:

Life, Liberty, Pursuit of Happiness.

This is a good list, but there is an underlying first principle that must be believed in order to believe in these.

You have to believe in a creator god who loves creation, and you have to believe that we are made in the image of God (or some similar axiom).

So, in fact, these “God given rights” are actually a statement of belief. Some (like marxists) don’t believe in them because they do not believe in God.

That’s why Marxism and the freedom loving, individual rights, Classic Liberals are antithetical.

Do people think that when they ask questions like this, they have some sort of 'gotcha' moment?

When I read this article about the Louisiana passing a bill to grant concealed carry without a permit or training this made me question the use of the term “God-given right”

Republican Oil City state Rep. Danny McCormick's House Bill 131 would "restore the Second Amendment in Louisiana."

"For too long Louisiana has been infringing on that God-given right," said McCormick, who said his 6-year-old granddaughter is "quite proficient" with an AR-15 assault rifle.

That’s a stretch.

Yes, I would say that the right to self-defense is a God-given right.

In the context of the culture of the USA in 2013, and based on the Bill of Rights, I also agree with adherence to the 2nd amendment, but it’s not a God-given right.

The Bill of Rights rest on the notion of God-given rights, but it’s not synonymous.

Yes. And, no. Different “rights” and responsibilities (which almost no one wants to admit to) depending on gender and ethnicity.

There is only one race- the human race. There are only two genders- male and female. There are only two ethnicities in God’s eyes- Jew and Gentile. What’s your point?

Being as those who think there are more than two genders also state that gender is a man-made construct, then no.

No matter their sex or race, yes.

It is a topic ripe for an interesting discussion, but too few here are capable of that sort of objective discussion.
