Why do we buy into the worship of the military?
When my son was about 11, I sat him down and told him that no matter what, I would never support him joining the military. No way would I ever allow him to be cannon fodder in a rich man’s war. When we say “thank you for your service”, whose interests are they actually being “served”? As a young girl when I learned about war, I was horrified and couldn’t believe there could be such a thing. In my little girl’s mind, it was a game where the opposing teams died. I remember thinking this couldn’t be true. Perhaps if we ever evolve as a species, people will look back and be horrified that war was ever a thing. Or not. I’m expecting to be pilloried by DUes, but to me war and worship of the military is kind of insane as its most basic level. An please no lectures about how the military “protects my freedom”. The military industrial complex could give two shits about this black girl’s “freedom”. Really I think most people joint the military because they lack other options, but they’re given the consolation prize of “respect” and “gratitude” so everybody feels better about it.

within my lifetime. But to remind people of that fact is to invite the kind of groupthink response that has brought us to this dead-end situation we’re in.
This nostalgic jingoism that passes for patriotism seems to be nearly impossible to overcome.

I'm sure these same DU folks want us in Syria and at war with Russia.
Posted on 11/29/19 at 6:28 pm to Sticky37
I'd bet $100 these same people lost their minds when Trump said he was pulling out of Syria

Listen all you ignorant hypocritical trash that are out there ranting up your White superiority and White supremacy......frick you all. Your european ancestors came over here and committed the largest genocide in the world's history on the 100 Million residents of this country. Columbus day is a complete travesty, being nothing more than a total pack of lies, and Thanksgiving even more so

While it is difficult to determine exactly how many Natives lived in North America before Columbus,[6]estimates range from a low of 2.1 million[7] to 7 million[8] people to a high of 18 million.[9]

99% of the military aren’t looking to be “worshipped” and don’t give two fricks what these losers think of them. They’re too busy doing a job that allows said losers the freedom to be assholes.

A lot of what she said isn’t wrong sadly,
WW1 - no business there
WW2 - we ensure the deaths of 100 million souls to Communism
Korea - saved people from communists
Vietnam ???
Iraq 1 and 2 fought for Israel and Saudi Arabia
Afghanistan - the Taliban will take over a few months after we leave

Also, really? You just gonna throw your kid to the side if they choose the military?

The way most of that is delivered is hyperbolic nonsense, but they're not very far off. The only war anybody on this board could possibly have lived through, for which you could make an argument that we belonged in that war, was WWII, and even then there's a pretty compelling argument that we took our involvement too far. I'm closing in on 30 and the US has not fought a single war in my lifetime that could be described as anything more than mercenary adventurism. The institution simply is not what it was.
That's not an indictment of the brave men and women in it, but I'm honestly a bit surprised that the fact that those brave soldiers' sacrifices have been a total waste due to inept politicians is even controversial at this point.

I oppose most military operations, unless we are directly attacked. Having said that, I still revere the people that wear the uniform of the United States. I don’t blame them for the wars they’re asked to fight in; I blame the government.

Perhaps.
But, blaming the people in the military for it is silly which is what these DU people seem to want to do.
It's not like the military is starting the wars.

I have no doubt. You're definitely right that the rank-and-file being blasted in those quotes didn't start any stupid wars. It's not their fault.

If a lot of what she said isn’t wrong, then how do you or her explain the fact that people/countries have been in war since the beginning of time? Take America out of the equation totally and there will still be wars just like there always was. We need the military. Like it or not. If not for the military, some country will take everything we have.

What was being taken from us in Afghanistan? Iraq? I’m all for a powerful military to project power, we should have taken Cuba and Mexico, we should own the Western Hemisphere. But trillions of dollars and thousands of live for nothing around the globe? To enrich international high finance, look who owns these companies...name a defense contractor and look who owns them.

It's like carrying a firearm. You don't carry it with the intention to use it. You carry it to convince someone else not to.

I’m sure a lot of people will disagree, but I don’t so much have a problem with us intervening in conflicts. My issue is that our goal doesn’t seem to be outright victory. If the US is going to get involved then we should be all in. We should make their arse quit. When we pack up to come home there should be nothing left but ashes and rubble. Our last action in country should be spreading salt over the whole damn place.
Take ISIS for example. The fact that there was still anyone willing to try to create an Islamic State tells me that we went too easy on the taliban and al qaeda.
