How many videos have we seen where people are just straight up dumb and/or disrespectful towards police and things go sideways real quick?

I think it should be taught what to do when pulled over...

1. Both hands on wheel (so the officer can see both hands)
2. roll window down ahead of time, don't make them ask you to roll it down (again, so they can see your hands)
3. have drivers license and registration ready to hand the officer
3A. answer with Yes sir ,no sir to questions to show respect for their authority.

4. if the officer tells you to get out, you do it...

5. Be submissive and trustworthy...then everything works out fine

What not to do:

Do not resist answering questions or reject commands or following orders, get testy or defensive.

If you are being arrested, do not resist. It's happening and you're not winning that struggle.

at some point, resisting arrest must be the topic of discussion. How many riots have happened because a black man didn't want to be arrested and ended up dead during the altercation with police?

if the media won't bring it up, then our teachers must do it...as part of "your learning" to get a drivers license.

My son is 18, white, I've preached to him all of these things...over and over and over...every time a Floyd event happens, I bring it up, over and over... You can't be stupid, the law doesn't give a damn about your skin color, it only cares about what you did and your conduct when confronted by LEO

Do police make mistakes and misjudgments? Have a bad day like the rest of us? Yes they do, AND !!!! that's why you shouldn't risk them making a mistake or lack of training "at your expense" because you decided to test them or resist.

Obey, comply, be respectful, it's so easy...

#lawandorder

I say this as a person who hates big over powering government, I do not plan to get the vaccine.

but I view law enforcement differently... the law is in place for our benefit as a society, right?. so why make things worse by making LEO jobs harder?

isn't this basic common sense? Unfortunately, it must be taught, because distrust of police is being taught in the black community. Father or no father, it's being taught.

regardless of race, I think all young people need to be taught what to do in these situations.

If for no other reason, to ensure our young people view these shootings in the vein of "what should I learn from these shooting tragedies?"

1. Resisting arrest never ends well
2. don't break the law
3. Police make mistakes too

Obey, comply, respect...

Chris Rock had a funny video along those lines years ago. I just can’t remember what it was called.

Honestly, common sense should tell you what to do when pulled over

ETA sounds like it couldn’t hurt

Once upon a time, when children were taught respect for authority (starting with respect for their parents) such discussions were not necessary. Reckless behavior was much less common, and respecting authorities was automatic.

Of course, we have now become a 'progressive' society and look how much more advanced we are....... Actions do, indeed, have consequences!

Unfortunately, there's a huge shortage of common sense these days. I'd say it's in danger of becoming extinct.

I want to know what black parents are actually telling their kids when the have "The Talk" that everyone is so sad it's necessary to have. Because it seems like it must be this
1. Be as agressive and ignorant as possible. Make sure to overreact.
2. Ignore all commands, if possible spout nonsense about how the law works that is totally wrong.
3. Resist arrest. You can't win if you don't fight
4. Run, you are definitely going to get away
5. If possible try to grab one of the officers weapons
6. Make sure someone is filming so your family can get a bunch of money when you force a police officer to kill you.

yep, it was pretty good

but because it was meant to be funny, the point was lost

I know for many, nothing changes

I am mainly suggesting this to make sure our young people see the big picture in these situations rather than get in sucked into that big media vacuum where it's always the fault of the police

in the future will have a society full of people who hate the police for all the wrong reasons

All the worst offenders seem to be the kids of the ones who love to tell you they all have that “talk” at home, and it makes them so sad.

Dad and mom told me the rules when I got my license at age 16 and there was only one rule.

If you are ever pulled over by the police, do what the officer tells you to do, you comply, if you think you were mistreated you/we can file a complaint and we’ll get a lawyer.

Might not be a bad idea to do this at high schools named after civil rights leaders.

Why is it the responsibility of the government/school to teach them what any capable parent should do?

do all children have capable parents? I don't think so

Democrats are always saying education is the key to closing the gap ...well,

is the media helping matters? They are capable of speaking truth with honest reporting, - are we getting unbiased news coverage?

no, we get blatant dissension

just listen to the Floyd/Chauvin case commentary

Good lord, these people just want to hang the police officer, they don't understand why there needs to be a trial...

198 are lost every day in America to opioids...

but let's Burn America over a guy in an out of prison, on drugs who resisted arrest ...

what are we doing???? Why are we doing it?

The Talk:
Is telling your child that RACISM exist in America and you have to be aware of that.

To obey the law, if stopped keep your hand at the 10/2 position on the steering wheel.

When stopped get badge number of the officer that stops you if you've been mistreated.

Be aware that in America, you are viewed as a threat.

Those are just the start of "The Talk". Now how about training police better to know the difference between the taser and their weapon, whereas the weapon is ALWAYS on your dominant side.

Train police officers that when you check the pulse of someone in your custody, that should tell you the person is NO THREAT and you can lift your knee off his neck.

Train the police officer to recognize you're in the WRONG apartment BEFORE shooting someone.

Let's start there then we can get to Drivers Education. How about Police Education also.
