In Harrison, Ark., population about 11,000, a couple were swept off the road in their SUV during heavy rain into a drainage ditch. The ditch empties into a lake in the town. Their car was found downstream lodged between a bridge abutment and a tree with no bodies inside. Farther down where the stream dumps into the lake the man's wallet and shirt were found.

The city council is going to spend 400 grand to drain the lake in hopes of finding the bodies.

Is this really a good idea to spend that much taxpayer's money from such a small town in hope of maybe, or maybe not, finding the bodies in your opinion. I don't think so.

Wouldn’t it be cheaper to hire divers?

Sounds odd. Almost like they disappeared themselves.

It’s Arkansas. First thing I would check is all the illegal gill nets.

Because of the murkiness of the water the article indicates a diver's efforts would be fruitless. The article did say that about once every five years the lake is drained in order to clean it up. However, it was just done two years ago.

Duh, it's a government project ca. What else do you expect? The family was paying to drain it at first but then the city council said they would pay for it. The council did say they would stop the drain if the bodies were found. It sounds like one of those "brother-in-law" projects to me.

There are some specially trained black labs that can smell decomposing bodies in murky lake water.
They stand at the front of a small john boat and the handler scoops water and sprinkles it into the dog's muzzle. They alert and then you can do a drag or send a diver down at that spot.

Use a bunch of boats with fish finders. Find the biggest bunch of catfish you can find. Search there.

Used to live there and very familiar with the area. They have had divers in and used a sonar device - from what I've seen. I find this very odd. Not saying they aren't in there, but this is more of a pond than a lake. Deepest part maybe 10 feet, but during bad rains and flooding it has made it deeper.

I don't think they have crabs in the lakes of Arkansas, but I'm sure the lakes are full of catfish.

The bodies will not go unappreciated by nature. That's the matter of fact side of me speaking, because I have no connection to the deceased. However, if they were my relatives I would definitely have a different point of view, I'm sure.

I'm inclined to let the good people of small town Arkansas decide how they should handle this.

In that case, drain it and skip the next draining.
