Donald Trump was the big loser tonight.

As I have been saying tonight, look at the suburban numbers. Also, according to exit polls, 34% voted tonight to oppose Trump vs. just 16% who voted to support him. Overall, 58% of the people who voted today disapprove of Trump. The suburban shift coupled with enthusiastic Democratic turnout is the story tonight.
How are House Suburban Republican candidates going to reconcile Trump with their districts?

The race for Virginia governor on Tuesday night wasn't very close. And Republicans have Donald Trump to blame for it.
In key areas of Virginia Republicanism -- the suburbs of Richmond and the exurbs of Washington, DC -- Republican Ed Gillespie ran far behind recent past GOP gubernatorial nominees and even behind Trump himself.

So, why? Why did a race that most polling suggested was tightening -- in Gillespie's favor -- wind up not being all that close? The obvious -- and right -- answer is Trump.
The exit polls bear that out. Trump's approval rating among Virginia voters was just 42% as compared to a disapproval rating of 58%. Even more importantly, of the 50% of Virginians who said that Trump was a major factor in their vote in the 2017, twice as many said they wanted to send a signal of opposition to the President as said they wanted to send a signal of support.
The story of the race -- and Trump's drag on Gillespie -- can be told in the vote count in two counties: Loudoun and Chesterfield.

Suburban DC is different than any other suburban area in the country due to pretty much everyone living there having their livelihood depend on the federal government.

You sure want the Democrats winning the governor's race in a Democratic state that had a Democratic incumbent to mean something.

Tomorrow is the 1 year anniversary of you getting your arse handed to you. I've bookmarked some wonderful "predictions" you made on this board. You, Hugo, BamaAtl...amazing how positively ignorant and cringe worthy some of these gems have become...

This, literally, does not affect trump at all. Next year is when he will be the big loser , if things don't change.
Although I actually think trump would probably have a higher chance of winning reelection is the congress went blue in 2018 rather than if it stayed red.

I have a feeling this went as intended. Gillespie was more Bush oriented, swamp type. The “R” by the name means nothing anymore.

It was a complete whitelash, for sure

It wasn't just suburban DC. Look at Richmond. Look at suburban Atlanta back earlier in the year. 19 point swing there. That excuse doesn't hold up.

Guyz... guyz...she can still win! This is it! Trump is done for sure this time!

Here's what I don't get, Toddy. Trump's policy agenda, with the exception of trade and some foreign policy, is broadly similar to a traditional republican. Deregulation, tax cuts, moral majority religious soundbites, all the goodies.
Both Bushes and Reagan were able to run up giant margins in the suburbs running on similar platform.
I'm guessing their opposition to DJT stems more from who he is than what he stands for.
