Do you think Clarence Thomas gets to pick his successor?

It’s hard to replace what that man represents on that Court. The racist Democrats would probably have a problem if he, Clarence, didn’t pick a black man. I just think that a man of his character should have a say in his replacement when he bows out gracefully and diplomatically.

Dude, Kavanaugh literally clerked for Kennedy, later replacing him on the bench. stfu.

so?
to be fair there’s only a few names in line for that spot regardless of president and go figure, they’re all pretty closely linked

I know that’s not how it works normally but Thomas isn’t normal. Also, it’s not unprecedented to have input.

assuming he wants to retire when a Republican is president.... he will likely have heavy influence, especially because his wife will do a lot of the influence work for him.
Also Thomas is maybe the greatest living American.

I would like to see this "special club" pattern broken and have a non lawyer appointed.
Let's get some thinking from outside of the bubble in that room.

Thomas would not have access to the vetting process that the President's team would have but I think the Justice would be able to make suggestions. Ultimately though, it's totally up to the President.

Now that would be really interesting. Perhaps some common sense.

dotard is already appointing judges who have never tried a case so this may have legs

You'd like a non-lawyer to make the highest decisions of interpretation of constitutional U.S. law?
I suppose you'd like a non-doctor as the Surgeon General?

Kennedy retired on the pretext that he get to essentially pick his replacement. Trump obviously had final say.
If it was a Dem replacing Thomas, obviously things wouldn't go down like that. Just like if RBG is out, Dems don't get a say.

Do you really want to compare obama appointees to Trump appointees?
I keep underestimating how stupid you are.

We've had non lawyers on SCOTUS before.
It's a panel of 9. One or 2 non lawyer perspectives won't de-rail the "legal expertise" of the entire body. It would actually make it more informed.

You don't think Trump agreeing to Kavanaugh sped up the Kennedy retirement?

Remember when racist arse libs tried to destroy his life and reputation?
Fun times.
Fun times.

Explain this
Let's say you have a brilliant critical thinker business person who has had to to navigate all of the tax laws and regulations from the other side of the government fence.
That would be quite a different perspective from a jurist who has been taking a government check for 20 or 30 years.
