This. The problem is not the size of the pie, but the allocation of the pieces of said pie.

Here's the issue, gnome.

We cut military spending, but the money we save is not going back into the economy. It is being locked away for future payments on the debt/interest. Military spending plays a larger role in maintaining economic demand in the economy and providing jobs to people.

Say you take away 5 billion in military spending. That 5 billion will not be released back into the economy. It will be saved for debt payments. That means our economy has lost out on 5 billion in the short term.

If we are taking a Keynesian approach to this wouldn't it make a lot more sense to put that money toward infrastructure investments rather than military ones? Same effects of spending money but at the end of the day we'd have bridges, roads, etc.

I think everything should/could be cut. As a percentage of total spending I think 10-15% is ideal.

I want to give the military whatever they need to defend our freedom.

At the same time, I also want them to be fiscally responsible and get rid of the waste.

Not on a soapbox baw other than the government needs to spend less. Don't like my threads, don't click.

Someone earlier made a great point about the mission of the military that I hadn't really seen an answer to, but it's a good questions:

What is the mission of the military?

Yes. Before 9-11, Rumsfeld was essentially compiling a report for Bush on the best ways to reduce the military. Fast forward to what we have today - a surveillance state and an outrageous F35 program whose pork is so salty and tasty that even the likes of Bernie Sanders can't resist getting him a taste...in Vermont!

First, you need to understand the points you're making.

All you need do is go to the website of any military group or base and they tell you.

Here is Marine Base Camp Pendleton's:
quote:

Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton's mission is to operate a training base that promotes the combat readiness of the Operating Forces and the mission of other tenant commands by providing training opportunities, facilities, services and support responsive to the needs of Marines, Sailors and their families.

Mission Statement Camp Pendleton

You got a problem with that?

Yes. Rand Paul and not Trump should have been elected President. Unfortunately he can’t host a rally to save his life, so he’ll probably never be President. Rallies are important. It’s really been since Carter that we’ve had a President that couldn’t do this well.

Yes, I support cutting the budget but it will never happen. To start, the Senator or Representative from whatever state would lose a base will never let that happen. If somehow you get past that, whomever is responsible for allocating the spending would never play ball. They would cut spending wherever hurt the most so they can create a political story and get the budget raised again

close overseas bases and get the hell outta Afghanistan and wherever the hell else we’re currently bombing.

I agree with this if we can just bomb any of our enemies. If we pulled our military out of other countries then ISIS and others would grow and gain more power. So we would have to close our borders .

I wouldn’t want to cut money to the military till it’s a last resort.

I'd be for Military cuts only after a private company audits where the military budget is going. Gov't agencies, regardless of level or branch, are notoriously wasteful and will throw good money after bad repeatedly.

Not until every other area is cut first. The defense budget is 15-18% of the total budget and it is one of the few constitutionally mandated duties of the federal government.

I think that we can cut spending bigly while maintaining the strength we have. There are some shitty deals/contracts that need to be renegotiated and I think the specs on some material and equipment are overkill driving up costs.
