Did your parents teach you how to respond to and address policemen?

I keep seeing some black people say over and over again that they have to teach their kids how to act/respond to officers "because they're black" and that this shouldn't be the case in America.

I'm white and in my early 30s; I grew up in suburban white America, and my parents did teach me how to respond to officers. They also taught me how to be respectful to teachers, and other people I encountered as part of life. They didn't teach me this because we're white, they taught me this because respectful treatment of others is the expectation for civilized people.

Am I missing something here? Why is teaching your children to respect authority a burden on black people when all parents must teach this to their kids. That's called parenting, not racism.

I was taught to respect everyone. First and foremost my parents. So respecting a police officer is just second nature.

All I was told was to refer to them as police officers, not cops, because it’s more respectful.

Did they teach you to be polite to people who were trying to walk all over you too?

Mine just taught me to say " Yes sir and No Mam" that mostly worked pretty well.

I remember the first time I ever got pulled over by a cop, It was an Alabama State Trooper, I had already drank a couple of beers, and was heading to get some more. I was on my 10 day leave after Marine Corps Boot Camp, and driving My Mom's big Olds 98. He stopped me as soon as I pulled out of our little road. I pulled over and got right out of the car and stood there and was very respectful, showed him my driver's license, but Not my military I.D.. I remember it, like it happened yesterday. I was wearing jeans and a baseball style shirt, that had scarlet red and gold pinstripes, with a big Eagle Globe and Anchor emblem over the heart. I had a 4 day old high and tight hairdo, and beard stubble all over my face.
He was looking at my driver's license and he asked me, "Who do you belong to boy?" I answered with my parents name, and pointed up the hill to our house up in the pine trees. I saw him grin and said, "oh you mean The Branch, United States Marine Corps Sir. He Handed me my license back smiling, and said " You're squared away, you be careful.

Dad taught me to take the keys out of the ignition, place hands clearly on the steering wheel, and answer with respect. He said it would put the officer at ease and get me out of tickets.

I still mostly follow that advice, except I rarely remove my keys from the ignition.

<-- White guy btw.

Ding ding ding

Resisting arrest or running away is present in probably 99% of these cases. If you’re being accosted, but innocent let the court system deal with it. Pretty simple concept.

Yep my father burned it into my head. My one encounter (ran red light) both the officer and I made it home that day

My dad told me how to interact with cops. It's simple. Be respectful, don't give them a reason to treat you poorly. If you think you were pulled over or approached wrongfully, tell them in a normal tone, but don't try to hold court in the street.

My dad also told me to follow instructions, memorize my DL license, keep my hands on the wheel or in clear view , turn on my dome lights, say sir , keep all documents updated and in an envelope, never question motive of cop,Etc.
