To Our Valued Customers:

In light of recent feedback and attention we’ve received about our product naming, we have some things we’d like to say to clarify our approach.

A few weeks ago, an online petition was launched calling on us to “remove racist packaging from [our] products.” Following were inaccurate reports that the petition prompted us to take action. We want to be clear: we disagree that any of these labels are racist. We do not make decisions based on petitions.

We make decisions based on what customers purchase, as well as the feedback we receive from our customers and Crew Members. If we feel there is need for change, we do not hesitate to take action.

Decades ago, our Buying Team started using product names, like Trader Giotto’s, Trader José’s, Trader Ming’s, etc. We thought then—and still do—that this naming of products could be fun and show appreciation for other cultures. For example, we named our Mexican beer “Trader José Premium” and a couple guacamole products are called “Avocado’s Number” in a kitschy reference to a mathematical theory. These products have been really popular with our customers, including some budding mathematicians.

We constantly reevaluate what we are doing to ensure it makes sense for our business and aligns with customers’ expectations. A couple years ago we asked our Buying Team to review all our products to see if we needed to update any older packages, and also see if the associated brands developed years ago needed to be refreshed. We found that some of the older names or products just weren’t connecting or selling very well; so, they were discontinued. It’s kind of what we do.

Recently we have heard from many customers reaffirming that these name variations are largely viewed in exactly the way they were intended—as an attempt to have fun with our product marketing. We continue our ongoing evaluation, and those products that resonate with our customers and sell well will remain on our shelves.

Trader Joe’s has been a unique, fun and neighborly place to shop for over 50 years. We look forward to taking care of our wonderful customers for many future decades.

- Trader Joe’s

On one hand, it sounds like they're walking back some earlier moves and trying to make it look like they didn't bend.

But on the other - companies in general seem to have no issue caving and taking credit for caving, so I'm not sure why they'd try to cover it up in this environment.

Either way, could be some progress.

Some fellow compadre wrote a solid letter stating that it's not insulting to the Hsipanic community and they actually love it

My wife was also angered that someone wanted it changed

100%. Anything that is not a complete apology and vow to bend over and grab ankles and give money to BLM is absolutely a large middle finger to the woke crowd.

Gotta respect that move.

I imagine real market research would've shown that all along

One of the most concerning things about this entire saga is that companies (including public companies) began acting irrationally (not profit-centric).

They went woke. The warning signs of broke began to appear. The result: Trader Joe feeling sleepy.

Trader Joes didn't bend and I kind of like them though there isn't one conveniently close to me. It is 20 minutes away but when I am by one I use it.

Let's face it, the "woke" crowd is not TJs target market, Karens are.

I'm sure nobody is truly targeting the diehard woke crowd. They're misfits and societal rejects. But TJ customers very likely trend younger and more urban, so I have to assume they're pissing off a lot of semi-woke types.

Trader Joe is Aldi. So if you have an Aldi nearby, you can still support them.

Where I am, TJ serves the "crunchy" mamma group the most. These women would have been considered very liberal a few years ago but now these women would be classified as hardcore right.

Exactly. How many Hispanic people are offended by Trader Jose? Zero. This stuff really is the pinnacle of stupidity.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised, but wow. People really have nothing better to do than bitch about this kind of thing.

Anyway, good for them

Yeah, I’ll think about how they stood up to the mob while I wait outside in a line of masked folks, standing 6 feet apart, waiting for someone to leave the store so another person can enter. Or maybe I’ll ponder that while I wait for the first hour after opening to end so a shopper less than 65 years old can enter.
