Was the Obama administration the first to start truly using EOs to make changes? I was too young to know anything before that. I’m sure they were used before that but not to this magnitude.

This seems like a very dangerous trend that was started and is now completely out of control. What can be done to fix this? This seems, in my uneducated opinion, to circumvent the whole checks and balances system.

EO’s have always been a part of governance and still should be to an extent......Obama took it to another level when he got pissed the Tea Party was blocking all his legislation and said frick it and took it to a new level

No, it's my understanding that Clinton has far more than any of the Presidents since him.

No. Executive orders and unilateral executive authority have been utterly out of control since the early 30’s. Said development is 100% and solely the fault of Congress and its refusal to perform its duty

EOs have always been a thing. Sometimes far more common than in the current era.

Goes back even further I would suggest the significant use started with Teddy Roosevelt.

Clinton, Bush and Obama all issued more than 250 EOs in eight years. Bush issued the most at 291. Trump issued 217 in 4 years, though his were very different as often times they stripped power from the executive branch.

Quantity of EOs is meaningless. Obama took it to a new level on EO content.

I know that's the narrative and it "seems" true, but I am sure someone has looked at the data as far as number of EO's per administration.

That’s a great link. These obviously have been around for awhile but, as someone else said, the content of these EOs has gotten out of control. They seem like they are pushing true policies through EO now, instead of just mandates at the time. I’m not the most well versed on this obviously but these have gotten completely out of control.

In real life, Obama used relatively few EOs. You'd have to go back to the 1880s to find a President who used them less frequently.

Agreed. Since politicians have turned into partisan jersey wearing assholes they can’t pass laws anymore so the executive branch governs by decrees that then gets undone when the pendulum swings back. It’s a clusterfrick.

The Legislative branch has essentially given up legislating. In its place we've gotten executive orders and regulations from the various departments. EOs can be undone, and the bureaucratic administrative state is unaccountable. It's not a great place we're in at the moment.
