Denham loses GOP seat in California

Rejected Trump btw.
Democrat Josh Harder has defeated Rep. Jeff Denham (Calif.), a week after the midterm elections were held, knocking off a Republican long seen as vulnerable.
The Associated Press called the race for Harder on Tuesday night.
Denham had sought to distance himself from President Trump on immigration, helping to launch the upstart effort from moderate Republicans to force votes on legislation protecting the so-called “Dreamers,” undocumented immigrants brought to the country illegally as kids, even as GOP leaders were fighting to keep the issue off the floor.

Trump supporters will spin this as a loss arising from failure to show GEOTUS fealty. Trump opponents will say it is the inevitable loss of a vulnerable seat.
Neither will be able to prove the case, but they will argue about it for weeks.

Good. He wouldn’t have really been much better then a Dem anyways. Run as a Republican in favor of protecting illegal immigrants, plan to lose.

quote:You demonstrate your ignorance nicely in this stupid statement. How did Trump do in his first midterm compared to Clinton or Obama? In fact compare it to any president since WW2. Only Bush and I believe Nixon did better.

Now that you've been corrected, if Trump is "toxic" how would you describe Obama and Clinton?

That only exists in your mind.

If OP article is true about GOP candidate refusing to stand with Trump on his immigration policies than that’s his own fault. CNN exit polls from Georgia, Texas, Florida, and Arizona all showed that clear majority stood and agreed with trumps immigration platform it’s a winning issue. Those that rejected it are seeing the fallout.

The exit polling I saw specifically was toward the gubernatorial candidates and why the voters made their choice. Ducey and Abbott won by large numbers. DeSantis and Kemp looks like they’ll win as well. DeSantis being the bigger surprise since he wasn’t an incumbent.
To answer your direct question I’m not sure. It’s coming out that McSally wanted to distance herself from Trump and take a more moderate approach. That was retarded considering that’s exactly what flake did and that garnered him a 19% approval rating.
My best guess is that the hardline GOP just couldn’t get their candidate to primary the moderates out and just sat at home. Sometime you have to lose an election to prove a point. I’m not happy we lost seats but if immigration was a winning issue for your side yet you choose to go the opposite direction I don’t blame said constituents for sitting out.

That's sounds reasonable, but I suspect the voters' reasons for how they voted are less reasoned and frighteningly capricious. Why would the republican for governor in AZ get so many more votes than the senatorial candidate? If you support a conservative governor and Trump, why not support McSally to at least prevent the Senate from flipping?
I understand the split in Florida because Nelson was the incumbent and that carries huge weight.
I wonder what percentage of casual voters are loathe to vote straight party ticket because they want to be able to claim they are reasonable. How many go in with the notion that regardless of how well one is doing the President needs checks in place in the form of split government? I doubt they poll that.
