Dems Are Wrong About GOP, and vice-versa
Posted by AggieHank86 on 8/17/18 at 5:04 pm185
quote:538
Americans overall are fairly misinformed about who is in each major party — and that members of each party are even more misinformed about who is in the other party.
...
Blacks made up about a quarter of the Democratic Party, but Republicans estimated the share at 46 percent. Republicans thought 38 percent of Democrats were gay, lesbian or bisexual, while the actual number was about 6 percent. Democrats estimated that 44 percent of Republicans make more than $250,000 a year. The actual share was 2 percent.
...
In short, “the parties in our heads” ... are not the parties in real life.
...
“The danger of mega-partisan identity is that it encourages citizens to care more about partisan victory than about real policy outcomes,” Mason told me. “We find ways to justify almost any governmental policy as long as it is the policy of our own team. What is best for America, Americans or even small children is secondary to whether our party’s team gets what it demanded.

I wonder why everyone is misinformed...

It’s true. Many voters of both parties think John McCain is a Republican, when that simply isn’t correct.

quote:This actually ties to the study. You and those who share this view (perhaps a majority of this forum) not only have totally convinced yourselves that this is true, but also have convinced yourselves that YOU are the majority of the GOP.
Many voters of both parties think John McCain is a Republican, when that simply isn’t correct.
But the TRUTH is that he simply belongs to a different WING of the GOP than you, and that the GOP coaltion is comprised of AT LEAST five different wings ... NONE of which is a clear majority, and ALL of which have more in common with one another than with the Dems.
If your understanding of your own party is this poor, how great must your misunderstanding of the OTHER party be?

Given all the special interests, how many wings does the Dem party have?

quote:I would not divide either party based upon “special interests,” because you would end up dividing BOTH into dozens of “wings,” with LOTS of overlap between the wings.
Given all the special interests, how many wings does the Dem party have?
Wkipedia describes seven wings among the Dems, though I would combine several as being too similar to distinguish from one another.

Plus, who thinks that 46% of the Democratic Party is black?
That wouldn’t be statistically impossible with the US demographics and party size.

Aggiehank
You’re a self proclaimed libertarian yet you towed the party line in voting for GOP presidents since Reagan, including both neo con Bushes...
This article points a finger at you for voting for the mega party just to get the “win”.

The part that supports Trump is about 90% of it, which the last time I looked constitutes a majority.

quote:Yes, Trump has effectively formed a coalition within the GOP coalition, AND added non-GOP members to his coalition.

That is a distinct (and interesting) issue, versus the existence of longstanding wings within the GOP. There are PLENTY of GOP voters who now support Trump, but do NOT hate McCain with fervor seen on this forum.

Scanned through it. Good lord. I knew most people are dumb, but there is a fundamental misunderstanding of basic demographics among the average American.

All I know is the Democrat party is made up of 100% idiots
The GOP is made up of about 75% idiots

I would put the numbers closer to 90% and 80%, but the concept is the same.
